Split / Second: Velocity

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Split / Second: Velocity is an arcade racing game developed by the British Black Rock Studio and published by Disney Interactive . The game was released on May 21, 2010 in Europe for Windows , Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 . A version that was barely reduced in functionality found its way onto the PSP on November 18, 2010 . After Split / Second: Velocity had not brought the hoped-for economic success, the developer Black Rock Studios of Disney Interactive was closed.

action

The game is about the fictional TV show Split Second , in which the participants race for "money and fame" in a major tournament. The player plays a participant in this show with the aim of winning it. The series is divided into episodes. In each episode you have to drive several races of different types in order to win so-called credits , with which you can unlock further episodes and cars. For this purpose, the player has "power plays" available with which the route can be changed, opponents can be switched off by triggering explosions and shortcuts can be opened. At the end of each episode, a so-called “elite race” has to be driven and one of the first three places is taken. The aim of the game is to “hold out” until the last episode and emerge as the winner of the competition.

vehicles

A Porsche Cayman served as a template for a car in Split / Second

The vehicles in Split / Second are fictitious and have no names from real brands . There are four invented vehicle brands in the game: Cobretti, Hanzo, Ryback, and Elite, although most vehicles are modeled on real cars. This is because the necessary licenses were mostly not available.

DLC

To Split / Second one was DLC released, which will unlock all cars, tracks and game modes. Furthermore, a second DLC called "Hyper Car" was released. This contains four new vehicles. Another DLC brings new liveries for all Elite models available in the game. In addition, three completely new game modes have been brought into the game with an additional DLC each. This includes the Death Storm game mode, which is a mixture of the air attack modes and the classic race. A brand new route is always included with each additional game mode.

criticism

Despite its poor implementation, especially for the PC, the game received mostly good or mixed reviews.

"Split / Second is the most fun I've had playing a racing game in years. Split / Second is akin to a Disney thrill ride that's filled with explosive racing action at all the right moments. "

"After just a few hours behind the wheel, you get tired of the game and it feels as if the promised, exciting chaos was largely consumed during the development of the title."
