Sumo Digital is a UK development studio based in Sheffield . It was founded by former employees of the Gremlin Interactive development studio after its closure in 2003. The studio mainly develops and ports games for mobile and download platforms. In addition, the studio developed the titles Baphomet's Curse: The Angel of Death and Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing and its successor Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed .

Company history

The company was founded in 2003 by Carl Cavers, Paul Porter, Darren Mills and James North-Hearn. The founders were previously executive employees of the British studio Infogrames Sheffield House , formerly Gremlin Interactive. The studio attracted attention mainly by porting games for the online network Xbox Live Arcade . Due to the successful implementation of England International Football (2004), Sega received the order to port the classic arcade game Out Run 2 (2004) on the recommendation of Microsoft . Through this project, the company received several follow-up orders for Sega series, in addition to Out Run for the Virtua Fighter and Sonic series .

On behalf of Revolution Software , Sumo developed the fourth part of the adventure series Baphomet's Curse , subtitled The Angel of Death (2006). The story design came from Revolution founder Charles Cecil , while Sumo was responsible for the technical implementation. With Cecil's participation, Sumo Digital also worked on several adventure episodes for the British television series Doctor Who in 2010 on behalf of the BBC .

At the beginning of 2007, Sumo opened a branch in Pune, India . On August 17, 2007, Sumo Digital was taken over by the US company Foundation 9 Entertainment . Sumo CEO James North-Hearn was appointed Managing Director for all European activities of Foundation 9. In March 2008, North-Hearn finally assumed the role of CEO of the Foundation 9 group of companies. Co-founder Carl Cavers took over his previous role as Managing Director Foundation 9 Europe.

In 2014 Sumo became independent again through a management buy-out with the support of the investment company NorthEdge Capital. A third development studio was opened in Nottingham in March 2016 . In July 2014, the company took over the design studio Atomhawk. In January 2017, the company finally went public in London as the Sumo Group. On the first day of trading on the Alternative Investment Market , sumo was valued at £ 145 million. In January 2018, Sumo took over the VR development team at the Icelandic development studio CCP in Newcastle . In August 2018, the independent developer The Chinese Room was acquired.
