Broken Sword: The Angel of Death , and Broken Sword 4 (orig. Broken Sword: The Angel of Death in the United States Secrets of the Ark: A Broken Sword Game ) is a Adventure - Computer game by British developer Revolution Software and fourth parts the Baphomets curse series . It is the direct successor to Baphomet's Curse: The Sleeping Dragon and was published in September 2006 by the publisher THQ .

action

George Stobbart is now working as a lawyer in a shabby bond office. His relationship with Nicole has broken up for some time. When a young woman named Anna Maria enters his office one day, he falls head over heels in love with the mysterious beauty. Her sudden disappearance triggers George's fourth adventure. Again, the story arc includes the search for an ancient artifact of great and terrible power, the Ark of the Covenant, in the course of which George must save the world again.

Thematically, the game is based on film noir , with Anna Maria as the opaque femme fatale . George's former girlfriend Nicole Collard also appears as a controllable character, but takes on a rather subordinate role compared to the previous titles. This results from the changed relationship with George.

Game principle and technology

As in the third part, the game uses a 3D engine that presents the events from a third-person perspective with changing, fixed camera positions. In contrast to the predecessor Baphomet's curse: The sleeping dragon , however, the point-and-click control was reintroduced as an option for keyboard control. The game principle remained otherwise unchanged. It is important to solve common genre puzzles. These include dialogue, object and combination puzzles. Climbing and sliding puzzles have been retained from the direct predecessor, and mini-games have been added.

One focus was the simulation of a credible environment, which the developer tried to achieve through smoke and particle effects, bloom or a reactive environment (e.g. pigeons flying up). The amBX technology from the Dutch company Philips was used here .

Production notes

Baphomet's Curse: The Angel of Death was created after all Revolution Software employees were laid off in 2004. While Revolution founder Charles Cecil was responsible for the concept and basic design of the game together with a few freelancers, the title was commissioned by the British development studio Sumo programmed digitally. The optional reintroduction of Point & Click as a control method represented a partial departure from a statement by Cecil that he had declared point-and-click adventures dead. The principle of climbing and sliding puzzles was adopted from Baphomet's Curse: The Sleeping Dragon , but to a reduced extent, since the box-pushing puzzles were one of the main points of criticism of the predecessor. Like its predecessor, the soundtrack was written by Ben McCullough .

Broken Sword: The Angel Of Death received rather positive reviews. The review database Metacritic aggregates 31 reviews with an average value of 73. The trade magazine Adventure-Treff pointed out that the game begins with a conventional Knights Templar plot, but transfers this into a multi-layered story with echoes of Dan Brown's opus . In addition to the story, the magazine also praised the puzzle design, but criticized the outdated technology and the sometimes clumsy controls.

“Still, in a genre most commonly represented by uninspired low-budget titles or odd adventure-action hybrids, Ark is a great delight. While its old-school design is unlikely to win many new converts to the genre, it is still, flaws and all, the best adventure game to come out in several years. "

“Still, in a genre that is mostly represented by uninspired low-budget titles or weird adventure-action hybrids, Angel of Death is a great joy. While its old-school design is unlikely to attract many new fans to the genre, including minor flaws and the like, it is still the best adventure game that has appeared in recent years. "
