history

Saint Brannock came from South Wales as a missionary in 550. Brannock was a priest in the household of the Brychan, King of Brecknock. He married the king's daughter, but leaving the royal house was disapproved of. At that time, many Welsh came to this side of the Bristol Channel .

Brannock came to northern Devon and landed at the mouth of the nearby Taw. He founded the Christian community. Later the first church on Caen was built and the place was founded.

The village had a train station on the now defunct railway line from Barnstaple to Ilfracombe, some of the remains of which can still be seen today.
