Out Run (also OutRun and Outrun ) is an arcade - racing game from Sega , which in 1986 amusement arcades appeared. The game by the Japanese developers is set in landscapes that look like California or desert , but it also contains many automotive and cultural reminiscences of Europe .
description
The player controls a convertible type Ferrari Testarossa through a branching race course and it has a blonde female passenger at his side. With Coconut Beach as the starting point, he has to reach four checkpoints in order to drive through five sections in a set time limit.
At the time of its release, the game was unique in that it was possible to choose your own circuit (with the exception of the first one). Before each checkpoint, the road splits, which means that the player has to decide which of two route sections to drive through next.
The housing was available in a total of four different versions. There were two versions of the normal, upright model, the “deluxe upright” and a slightly smaller “mini upright”. The upright models only have a steering wheel, gears and pedals. There were also two variants of the more luxurious "sit-down" models, which had the stylized shape of a Testarossa. These were equipped with a hydraulic mechanism that moved the part of the housing where the driver sat in accordance with the actions in the game. Out Run was the first racing simulation to support force feedback .
If the player had an accident, the car rolled over, the driver and passenger were thrown out of the car, and the player was virtually scolded by his blonde passenger.
The game was very successful and is often considered the best racing game in arcades. The game owes its popularity mainly to the innovative hydraulic housing, the selection of its background music and track and the graphics, which gave the player a speed at the time that no other slot machine racing game of the time could. 3D racing simulations have existed since 1976, but graphically these were much simpler. The game Pole Position (Namco, 1982) is considered to be the forerunner of the realistic racing game.
music
The game was accompanied by a catchy soundtrack and offered the player three pieces of music to choose from. Before the start of the race, the player chose his favorite tune using the radio in the Testarossa. The music was composed by Hiroshi Kawaguchi , who was also responsible for the soundtracks for other Sega arcade games. The pieces in detail were called:
- Passing Breeze
- Magical Sound Shower
- Splash wave
- Last Wave (music from the high score table)

Sequels
In the arcade there was an additional module for Out Run 1989 Turbo Outrun . In Turbo Outrun , you only drove along a single route with checkpoints and drove 16 sections from New York City to Los Angeles . It offered a rock-heavy soundtrack.
There was another sequel in 1992 with OutRunners , which in turn allowed the choice of route. For the first time, it was possible to combine several games, which allowed up to eight players to race against each other head-to-head. The game also offered the player eight different cars to choose from. It was the most successful game for Sega's System-Multi-32 hardware and one of the last successful 2D games from Sega.
In 2003 the sequel OutRun 2 appeared in the Japanese gambling halls. On 29. September 2004 published Sega a version for the Xbox . OutRun 2 offers the player three game modes ( Outrun-Mode, Heart Attack, Time Attack ), an online mode, the OutRun-Challenge and a revised graphics engine. In the OutRun Challenge, the player has to complete 101 varied missions to unlock new cars or playing cards.
On March 31, 2006 , the extended version, OutRun 2006: Coast 2 Coast , was released for the Xbox , PlayStation 2 and PlayStation Portable . This version also includes OutRun 2 SP. A PC version of OutRun 2006: Coast 2 Coast has been available since June 2006.
There were three other Out Runs that were only released for home consoles: OutRun Europe , Battle Out Run and OutRun 2019 . There is also a special version of Out Run for the Sega Master System that supports 3D glasses.
OutRun Online Arcade (based on OutRun 2 SP) has been available for download from Xbox Live and Playstation 3 PSN since April 2009 .
