The Chinese Room (based on the thought experiment of the same name ; also stylized as thechineseroom ) is a game developer based in Brighton ( England ). The lead developers are Dan Pinchbeck and Jessica Curry. The team began developing modifications and expansions for successful game brands, including Half-Life 2 and Doom 3 .

The Chinese Room became famous for its adventure game Dear Esther , which has received positive reviews from the trade press since its release on February 14, 2012 and was praised above all for its unusual game mechanics. The commercial title Dear Esther is a graphically enhanced remake of the same name Half-Life 2 modification from 2008, both use the Source Engine by Valve . Just one week after the release, over 50,000 copies have already been sold on the online platform Steam .

In 2013 they published the survival horror game Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs together with the Swedish developer studio Frictional Games , which is an indirect sequel to Amnesia: The Dark Descent . On August 11, 2015, Everybody's Gone to the Rapture was published , which takes up the approaches and concepts used in Dear Esther and develops them further. At first, Everybody's Gone to the Rapture was only released as an exclusive for the PlayStation 4 . A PC version of the title was released on April 14, 2016. The VR title So Let Us Melt was released on September 21, 2017 for Google Daydream.

In late September 2017, The Chinese Room announced that the team was taking a break from game development. In August 2018, the studio announced that they had joined British developer Sumo Digital .
