Crackdown 3

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Crackdown 3 is an action game from the developer studio Sumo Digital , which was released on February 15, 2019 for Xbox One and Windows . It is the third installment in the crackdown series . As the greatest innovation in multiplayer, it offers physical destruction calculated on the server side via Microsoft Azure . This means that even lower-performance systems can display complex physical effects, as the calculations do not take place locally but in the cloud . The game is also part of the Xbox Game Pass from day one .

action

The story takes place ten years after the events of Crackdown 2 . After a terrorist attack, the power supply was paralyzed around the world. The attack appears to have originated in New Providence , a city controlled by the mysterious Terra Nova organization. The so-called Agency , a kind of police and known from the previous series parts, takes care of the matter. A first attack against Terra Nova fails, however. Therefore, agents with special superpowers are sent, led by Commander Isaiah Jaxon (played by Terry Crews ).

Gameplay

The game takes over familiar gameplay elements from the first two series parts. The player is in an open game world and frees parts of the city of New Providence from criminal organizations. For this purpose, the respective leaders must be attacked, certain facilities wiped out and the entire enemy infrastructure destabilized. A large selection of weapons is available for this, from pistols to rocket launchers and you can also use your own superpowers. Vehicles found in the world can all be driven by yourself.

The multiplayer game called demolition zone (Engl. Wrecking zone ) and the first to offer a fully destructible environment. For the first time, physical effects are calculated on the server side via Microsoft Azure and not locally on the console or PC. Two teams with five participants each compete against each other. Two maps for multiplayer should be available for the release.

development

The game was first announced as an Xbox One Exclusive at E3 2014. It was shown for the first time at Gamescom 2015 on August 4th, 2015. The server-side calculation of the destroyed environment was shown here and it was shown that this technology offers twenty times more performance than calculated on a console.

Initially, Studio Cloudgine was responsible for development. However, that studio was bought by Epic Games in January 2018 . Therefore, it was announced at E3 2018 that Sumo Digital is now mainly responsible for the development of the game. However, Sumo Digital primarily only developed the single player. Elbow Rocket is responsible for the multiplayer.

The release of Crackdown 3 has been postponed several times. It was originally scheduled to appear in 2016. It was then initially postponed to November 7, 2017. Here it should appear at the same time as the Xbox One X release. A few months earlier, however, it was postponed to an indefinite release in the second or third quarter of 2018. The final release date is now February 15, 2019.

reception

The trade press rated the game mixed. At Metacritic it currently has an average value of 60 points (out of a maximum of 100). Above all, the clean comic style and a high level of exploratory appeal were positive. However, it was rated negatively in particular that the gameplay is quickly repeated and too little variety is offered.
