The Xbox One is a stationary game console developed by Microsoft and the successor to the Xbox 360 . The system was presented on May 21, 2013, is available as a console of the eighth generation in direct competition with Sony 's PlayStation 4 and Nintendo 's Wii U and Nintendo switch . It is the third game console from the Xbox brand , excluding hardware revisions. Microsoft specifically chose the name “One” because the new Xbox, as an advertised “all-in-one” console, is not only intended to serve as a video game platform , but also to expand the television with Internet services and apps . The connection between the different forms of entertainment was therefore initially the focus of the Xbox One.

In August 2016, a revised model called Xbox One S , which, in addition to other new features, brought improvements in image quality ( HDR10 ) and resolution in UHD (only in images / videos), was launched on the market. In November 2017, a more powerful version of the console was released with the Xbox One X. On April 16, 2019, Microsoft announced the Xbox One S All-Digital Edition, an Xbox One S without a drive.

The successor Xbox Series X was announced on June 9, 2019 at the Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles . The release is planned for Christmas 2020.

history

Before publication

Early 2013 came a leak the detailed technical specifications of the Xbox One (in preliminary reports often called "Xbox 720" , "Durango" , "Infinity" or "Xbox 3" hereinafter) to the Internet. In May 2013 Microsoft announced that it would present the "new generation" of the Xbox to the public for the first time on May 21 at 7:00 pm ( CET ). The presentation was broadcast live on Xbox Live and the Internet.

The presentation of the console received mixed to mostly negative feedback and was considered a PR debacle. In particular, communicated plans to hand match suspension, the possible user monitoring via Kinect and the general online compulsion within a 24-hour interval provoked an Internet Shit Storm . Videos on the official YouTube channel received such negative comments and ratings that Microsoft deactivated the comment function for users. Don Mattrick , head of the Xbox division and thus also responsible for the development of the Xbox One, resigned from his position at the beginning of July 2013 and left Microsoft, his successor being Phil Spencer . Mattrick's resignation has been linked to the numerous criticisms of the Xbox One launch.

At E3 2013 it was announced that the Xbox One would be released in November 2013 and that the starting price would be 499 US dollars or 499 euros. The activation of the console would be possible for the time being only in certain regions. Users from some countries such as Poland would only be able to activate and thus use the consoles later. Users from Germany and Austria could activate their consoles on the day of publication. In Switzerland, the Xbox One only appeared in early 2014.

On June 19, 2013, due to the massive feedback on the used game ban and online connections, it was announced that Microsoft is canceling all plans in this regard. The console only needs a one-time online connection for activation, otherwise it can be operated completely offline . Used games can be resold or loaned out as normal, there will be no restrictions for this. Despite the many criticisms, there were a few people who had called for the restrictions to be upheld and started their own unsuccessful petition for this.

Sales start

The console has been available in many European and American countries as well as Australia since November 22, 2013. Microsoft announced on March 19, 2014 that the Xbox One will be available for purchase in a further 26 countries with a delay due to localization from September 2014, including in Switzerland since September 5. In Japan, the console sold only 23,562 times in the first week compared to the PlayStation 4 or Wii U , each with around 300,000 devices in the first week. Also compared to the previous model Xbox 360, which could be sold twice as often in the first week of sales, the Xbox One fared worse. However, the weak sales figures correlated with a general downturn in the Japanese market for home consoles, as the market increasingly shifted towards mobile consoles and smartphones. In the third week of sales, sales fell to 1,300 devices. Compared to the press Microsoft stated that it was dissatisfied with the sales figures.

On September 29, two days before the start of Golden Week , the Xbox One was released in the People's Republic of China and sold over 100,000 times in the first week, including pre-order numbers. It was also the first official manufacturer's console in China for 14 years, since in the previous years only adapted license models from Chinese manufacturers had come onto the market. Chinese media described the successful start of sales as a salvation for Microsoft's sales figures in Asia, as the Xbox One had only received little approval in South Korea and Japan.

The Xbox One in competition

On November 12, 2014, Microsoft announced that it had shipped ten million units to retailers so far. Competitor Sony had announced ten million copies sold three months earlier in August 2014. At the end of December 2014, the H4LT group leaked the complete SDK for the console (“ XDK ”) as of November 2014, including extensive documentation and white papers that are subject to NDA . After analysis by Eurogamer and GameStar , the documents documented Microsoft's increasing turning away from Kinect motion control and the strategy of a multimedia control center for the living room. Instead, the focus in the documented period increasingly shifted to increasing performance and getting closer to the competing PlayStation 4. Overall, both consoles would have come very close to the computer again.

According to a study by the market research institute Nielsen in February 2015, most buyers of 8th generation consoles were already owners of a previous generation console. The most important reasons to buy the Xbox One were the brand, innovative functions, the faster processor, exclusive games or content and the fun factor. 76% of Xbox One buyers previously owned an Xbox 360, and 43% owned a PS3. With the PS4, which at that time had sold significantly more units than the Xbox One, the share of platform changers was 59%.

In October 2016 it was announced that the Xbox One was the best-selling console in the US and UK for the third time in a row - and therefore for the first time since its appearance - ahead of the PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Wii U.

Overview

The Xbox One allows access to films, music, television and the Internet via a personalized home screen. Voice and gesture control via the external Kinect sensor should also make it easier to use the console, although the voice control should only have worked in five countries on the day of publication.

operating system

Up to the 2015 dashboard update, Xbox One ran with three different operating systems , which are used depending on the application. In addition to the standard Xbox operating system, a Windows kernel ran on the console ; the third operating system component links the two by means of virtualization and thus serves as a hypervisor .

In autumn 2015, a system update to an adapted Windows 10 was released , with which a completely new dashboard ( New Xbox One Experience ) was introduced, which according to Microsoft should work more intuitively and faster than before. The Cortana voice assistant became an integral part of the Xbox One with an update in summer 2016 (Preview: Last Xbox One Experience). In addition, the customizable avatars introduced with the Xbox 360 have come back to the fore and backward compatibility with Xbox 360 games has been introduced.

advertising

Microsoft planned to run personalized advertising in the console's menu. In order to be able to better adapt this to the individual user, biometric data of the customers determined by Kinect is transmitted to the group. For reasons of data protection, Microsoft says it only allows “ limited access ” to the camera and microphone.

DRM and other restrictions

On June 19, 2013, Don Mattrick , head of the Xbox division, announced in the official Xbox blog that due to numerous complaints from users, all DRM measures, the online obligation and the used game ban will be removed. With the exception of a one-time online activation, the console behaves like its predecessor, the Xbox 360.

However, Microsoft reserves the right to change the system and the provisions on the subject of used game ban and online compulsory at any time.

Online activation

The console absolutely requires an online connection when it is used for the first time. A patch is downloaded that, among other things, lifts the originally planned ban on used games, removes the online requirement and supplements software that is not included in the delivery. This patch is absolutely necessary so that the console can function correctly both offline and online. After installing this patch, the console can also be used offline without any problems.

Others

US pre-orderers of the console had to contractually waive their right to participate in class actions against Microsoft. There could only be an arbitration process. The terms and conditions have been adjusted for the German market. Since German law does not recognize class actions, the corresponding clause has been omitted here.

Originally planned restrictions

Used game lock

Initially it was planned that games would be linked to a player's online account via serial number. Reselling video games would only have been possible to a limited extent. On June 19, 2013, Microsoft announced that they had canceled their plans in this regard and that there would be no used game ban.

The announced “family sharing” feature has also been deleted as part of this change. This was a system with which your own game library could be shared with up to nine other people. On June 14, 2013 it was announced that games could have been used across consoles, but not at the same time, which meant that it would not have been possible to play a game together using this function. Since games can now only be played by inserting the game disc and borrowing is possible again by passing on the Blu-ray, this feature has been deleted for the time being.

Online constraint

Initially, it was planned that the console would have to be connected to the Internet at least once every 24 hours, otherwise the user would lose access to his software library after this time interval and thus the ability to play his own video games on his system. On June 19, 2013, however, Microsoft announced that it would cancel its plans in this regard, the Xbox One will only need an Internet connection for the one-time setup. Nevertheless, a permanent online connection may be necessary if computing power or storage capacity is outsourced to online services .

Since only a one-time online connection is required, consoles that have already been activated can be used when traveling or when moving abroad, even if Microsoft has not planned the region for the official sale of the product.

On June 14, 2013, the Xbox support account stated on Twitter that the Xbox Live account would have been blocked for customers who violated the terms of use of the product (for example, by cheating or insulting them) due to the required online query As a result, the affected users irrevocably lose access to their own games. A short time later, however, it was said that there was a misunderstanding and that the statement related to the Xbox 360 account. No information is currently available on the handling of the Xbox One Live Account, and Microsoft has not issued an official statement.

Kinect connection

Contrary to initial reports, a connection to Kinect is not absolutely necessary. The Kinect sensor was included in every Xbox One bundle until the launch of the Xbox One without Kinect on June 9, 2014, and can optionally be used together with the console. It can be paused or switched off. Depending on the software, however, Kinect may be absolutely necessary for control in menus or video games. The wake-up function via voice control from standby mode can be deactivated so that the Kinect microphone does not have to be permanently active. Since it was stated at the beginning that Kinect must always be connected to the Xbox One, it was particularly criticized that a constantly switched on microphone and an active color camera, which are aimed directly at the user and living room, could enable extensive customer monitoring (see Criticism section ).

hardware

Basic hardware

The processor and graphics unit is a combination solution from the chip manufacturer AMD . The chip in 28nm structure width combines CPU and GPU on a single The ( APU ). In total, the chip consists of around 5 billion transistors . The console has 8 GB of DDR3 memory clocked at 2133 MHz and a bandwidth of 68.3 GB / s (Xbox One X: 12 GB GDDR5 ).

The custom graphics unit ( GPU ) is DirectX 11.2 compatible and has 32 MB eSRAM to compensate for the bandwidth deficit of the DDR3 main memory. This means that the competing PlayStation 4 has exactly 50% more shader performance available per cycle. At 853 MHz, the GPU achieved a performance of 1.31 TFLOP / s. Support for DirectX 12 was announced at the Game Developers Conference in March 2014.

The main processor consists of eight 64-bit cores with x86 architecture based on AMD's Jaguar with 4 MB L2 cache . The CPU achieves six operations per core and thus a total of 48 operations within one cycle. Originally designed with a clock rate of 1.6 GHz, this was increased to 1.75 GHz shortly before publication. Games could initially use six of the eight processor cores, the rest were reserved for the operating system and other background processes of the console. At the beginning of 2015 it became known that Microsoft had released part of the seventh processor core (50–80%) for game developers.

About 90% of the consoles are made by Flex , 10% by Foxconn .

Power supply

According to Microsoft, the power consumption of 100 W is only slightly higher than the consumption of the current revisions of the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. According to Microsoft, however, the console is "four times as quiet". As with the Xbox 360, the power supply is supplied by an external power supply unit with an integrated fan; with the Xbox One S, the power supply unit is integrated into the console.

The US environmental protection organization Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) has criticized the power consumption of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One game consoles, according to which the two consoles in standby mode are said to cause electricity costs of 400 million US dollars per year in the USA alone . In the case of the models supplied with the Kinect, this is attributed to the fact that they constantly “wait” for voice commands even in standby mode, whereby 15 watts would be consumed. The TV functions would also waste a lot of energy if the Xbox One is connected between the TV and the set-top box. In addition, the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 use between 30 and 45 times more energy than Apple TV or Google Chromecast when streaming movies . The adjustable power-saving functions would be praised, but according to NRDC, both consoles would consume two to three times as much power as their direct predecessors. The environmental protection organization asked Microsoft and Sony to reduce the energy consumption of the consoles and also to offer corresponding setting options in the options.

Models

Backward Compatibility

Due to the switch from a PowerPC architecture to an AMD64- based processor design, the Xbox One was not backwards compatible with the Xbox 360 at the time of publication . In order to still be able to play Xbox 360 games on the Xbox One, Microsoft presented software-based downward compatibility with the Xbox 360 at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) 2015 in Los Angeles. The function was delivered as a free system update in autumn 2015 and initially supported around 100 games. More titles will be added gradually. Scores, add-ons, achievements and gamers scores are taken from the Xbox 360. Existing Xbox 360 games can be installed on the Xbox One via disk or digital purchase; the disk must remain in the drive for non-digital purchases. The emulator also makes it possible to use functions of the Xbox One to take screenshots, use Game DVR or stream the games to a Windows 10 PC. The Xbox Guide known from Xbox 360 is also emulated, which only opens when the app window is open by pressing the View button and the Menu button at the same time, for example to access friends lists and Xbox Live parties.

Since October 27, 2017, the Xbox One is also compatible with the original Xbox .

Xbox One S

Xbox One S

On June 13, 2016, Microsoft presented a new version of the Xbox One at E3 2016, which is around 40% smaller than the previous console and offers support for UHD content (pictures and videos, but not in games) and HDR10. The console has a UHD -capable Blu-ray drive. The Xbox One S can now be placed vertically with a stand and the previously external power supply is now integrated. Furthermore, the APU is now manufactured by TSMC using the 16 nm FinFET process and the GPU clock has been increased from 853 to 914 MHz. This enabled the development of heat and power consumption to be significantly reduced. The controller has been slightly revised and now supports the Bluetooth standard for radio transmission, which means that it is now also compatible with Windows 10 . The Xbox One S is available in different configurations with 500 GB, 1 TB or 2 TB hard drive and in different colors. The connection for the Kinect sensor is no longer necessary, so the Kinect camera can only be connected with an adapter that is not included in the scope of delivery. Previous owners of an Xbox One and a Kinect sensor can obtain the adapter free of charge from Microsoft on request. The offer for people with a Kinect sensor who upgraded from Xbox One to Xbox One S ended in March 2017. The Xbox One S was not available in black as standard, only in white. By mid-2017, Xbox One sales were estimated at 30 million units.

Xbox One S All-Digital Edition

On April 16, 2019, Microsoft announced the Xbox One S All-Digital Edition. It is an Xbox One S that has no disc drive. Instead, content can only be downloaded digitally from the Microsoft Store. The model with 1 TB of hard disk space was released on May 7, 2019 at a recommended retail price of 229.99 euros. The games Minecraft , Forza Horizon 3 and Sea of Thieves are included with the console via game codes.

Xbox One X

Xbox One X

On June 11, 2017, Microsoft presented another variant of the Xbox One at E3 2017 with the Xbox One X, it is the most powerful console of the current console generation. The console was available at release in a limited Project Scorpio edition, with a green Project Scorpio lettering applied to the front of the console and the controller . The buttons of the Xbox One controller are all black and the console has a slightly different surface structure. The Xbox One-X-Project-Scorpio-Edition also comes with a stand so that the console can be set up vertically. The Project Scorpio Edition had a 1 TB hard drive and cost just as much to release as the normal Xbox One X.

The Xbox One X uses an adapted AMD Jaguar CPU, the clock frequency of which has been increased to 2.3 GHz. The graphics processor (GPU) clocks at 1.172 GHz and the number of GPU computing groups ( compute units ) has been increased from 12 to 40. Together with the 12 GB GDDR5 main memory, which enables a memory bandwidth of up to 326 GByte / s with a 384 bit wide connection, the Xbox One X achieves a computing power of 6 TFLOPS . For the first time in the history of consoles, a “vapor chamber” (cooling with heat pipes) is used to cool the system. In order to keep power consumption as low as possible, the Xbox One X works with the Hovis method, named after a Microsoft hardware developer, which is designed to maximize performance and minimize energy consumption at the same time. Like the Xbox One S, the console also has a UHD Blu-ray drive and support for HDR10, Dolby Vision , Dolby Atmos and DTS: X. In addition, it is compatible with all games and all accessories on the Xbox One. In addition, the Xbox One X supports AMD 's freesync technology to create so-called tearing to prevent and 120 FPS on compatible screens.

The Xbox One X is marketed as a real 4K console, but image playback devices with a lower resolution also benefit from the increased performance, as supersampling antialiasing (edge smoothing) is used in such a case. The console was released in Germany on November 7, 2017 with a 1 TB hard drive at a recommended retail price of 499.99 euros.

Only games that have received a so-called "Enhanced Upgrade" benefit from the full performance of the Xbox One X. This improves the display of the games (anti-aliasing, 4K support, higher visibility, more visual effects, etc.). This applies to selected Xbox One, Xbox 360 and Xbox original games and is expanded regularly.

Periphery

Wireless controller

At first glance, the wireless controller of the Xbox One differs only slightly from the controller of the previous model Xbox 360. Microsoft has made numerous improvements and optimizations during the development of the controller. The shape of the new controller is a bit more angular and the Xbox logo, which is still in the top center, is now glowing white. There is no display of which player is currently using the controller. The upper shoulder buttons are now slightly larger and the lower ones now contain force feedback motors. The analog stick now has a deeper recess, making it more grippy overall. The D-Pad, which has often been criticized for inaccuracy, has also been redesigned and no longer contains a round base, which increases precision. The start and back buttons have been replaced by the new view and menu buttons. But they still fulfill the same tasks as the old buttons. The battery compartment that was used on the old controller is no longer there: the batteries are now housed inside the controller. The Xbox One controller is also compatible with Windows, but initially only when using a USB cable. In Windows 10, the drivers are installed automatically. A wireless adapter for Windows 10 has been available since autumn 2015, with which the controller can also be used wirelessly on the PC.

The controller presented with the Xbox One S has been slightly redesigned and now has a slightly structured back. By switching the transmission to Bluetooth, it no longer needs the separate wireless adapter and can be used on Windows 10 PCs as well as on iPhones and iPads (from iOS 13) and Android devices with Bluetooth support.

Xbox One Elite Controller

At E3 2015 , Microsoft presented the “Xbox One Elite Wireless Controller”, an improved version of the normal wireless controller, during the Xbox press conference. The analog sticks are made of metal for longer durability, can be exchanged and are supplied in different lengths. There are also two interchangeable control pads included, one ordinary and one round. Four additional buttons, so-called paddles, can be attached to the back, which can be individually assigned. Above that there are two more switches that can be used to adjust the shoulder button travel, which shortens the response time. The elite controller differs from the normal controller by the gray ABXY buttons and the upper part, which is now silver instead of shiny black. An app is available for Xbox One and Windows 10 that can be used to assign the buttons on the controller individually.

Elite Controller Series 2

At E3 2019, Microsoft presented the "Xbox One Elite Wireless Controller Series 2", a revised Elite Controller that has been available since November 4, 2019. The controller has been technically partially revised and for the first time offers an integrated, non-replaceable battery that is specified with a running time of up to 40 hours. The controller can be charged wirelessly using the charging station supplied or using the USB-C port on the controller. Further customization options are the triggers, the path of which can be shortened with an additional step, and the analog sticks, where the resistance can be changed with the tool provided. The Elite Controller Series 2 is based on the Xbox One S controller, which means it can be used with Windows 10 PCs via Bluetooth.

Hard disk and expansion options

The Xbox One has a non-exchangeable hard drive in all models, with 500 GB to 2 TB of storage depending on the variant, three USB 3.0 ports and a Blu-ray drive with a slot-in slot . Since the system update from June 2014, up to two external hard drives with at least 256 GB of storage can be connected via USB 3.0.

On November 4, 2014, Xbox One was bundled with Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare . The included Xbox One has a 1 TB hard drive. An Xbox One Elite Bundle has been available since November 2015, which included an Xbox One with a 1 TB hybrid hard drive in addition to an Elite Controller.

The second hardware revision Xbox One S has a hard drive with a size of up to 2 TB.

Kinect 2.0

The camera used by the Xbox One is an evolution of the Kinect motion control already used by the Xbox 360 . In contrast to the first Kinect sensor, the resolution is increased from the VGA standard to 1080p . Kinect 2.0 was shipped as standard with every Xbox One and, contrary to early reports, does not necessarily have to be connected while the console is in operation. If a Kinect is connected, according to Microsoft, the camera can be set so that it does not record any data. The microphone of the Kinect 2.0 is intended to serve as a microphone for functions such as voice chat by default.

Since September 2014, after the introduction of the interim Xbox One solo version - without the external Kinect unit - in June 2014, Kinect has also been available separately for the Xbox One.

In contrast to the previous version , in addition to the Xbox One sensor, there will also be a separate Kinect unit for Windows, officially called Kinect for Windows v2 , which is primarily intended for developers and is not available in free trade. This only differs visually by the lack of Xbox logos. It is not possible to use the same camera on PC and Xbox One.

Xbox One without Kinect

Since June 9, 2014, the Xbox One has been available without the external Kinect control at the same retail price as the PlayStation 4 (as of May 2014). The new bundle was announced by Microsoft on May 13, 2014 and will be available in retail outlets for 399 US dollars or 399 euros from the specified date. The Kinect sensor will be available separately from “autumn”. It has been expected for a long time that Microsoft would lift the heavily criticized combination of the Xbox One with Kinect and at the same time react to competition from Sony with a significantly lower selling price. From June 2014, all Xbox 360 or Xbox One owners will also be able to use the entertainment apps without an Xbox Live Gold membership. According to Microsoft, game developers can now access up to 10% more GPU performance by eliminating the Kinect binding.

Phil Spencer , responsible for the Xbox and Microsoft Studios product divisions at Microsoft , commented on the new features in a press release on May 13, 2014:

“… Your feedback matters to us and it shapes the products and services we build. Your feedback showed up in the Xbox One console we launched back in November and in the monthly updates we've delivered since… First, beginning on June 9th, in all markets where Xbox One is sold, we will offer Xbox One starting at $ 399. This is a new console option that does not include Kinect ... "

“… Your feedback is important to us and it shapes the products and services we create. This is reflected in your feedback on the Xbox One console, which was released last November, and in the monthly improvements we've been releasing since ... First of all, from June 9th, we will be in all markets where the Xbox One Xbox One starting at $ 399. This new console variant will not contain a Kinect ... "

End of Kinect support

After the Xbox One became available without a Kinect sensor, Kinect became increasingly less important. The Xbox One S, released in 2016, does not have a Kinect connection and can only be used with an adapter. The gesture control via Kinect was removed after the dashboard update 2.0 in November 2015 without replacement.

The production and sale of Kinect for Xbox One, as well as the adapter for Xbox One S and X were finally stopped in November 2017.

Launch title

Within the first year, 15 games should be released for the Xbox One, eight of them as a completely new brand. The following games were available when the console was released:

Criticism during the publication period

The included external Kinect control, which has a microphone and a camera, and which could use the voice or face recognition software of the Xbox One to record user behavior while watching TV and other media use, was controversial under data protection law . The data obtained from this could be used for advertising and the design of the TV program. The German Federal Data Protection Commissioner Peter Schaar called the console a "monitoring device" and criticized the constant operation of the camera system. However, it is possible to completely deactivate the camera system by disconnecting the camera from the console. In June 2013, Microsoft announced that there would be various modes in which the Kinect functions would be restricted, and that complete shutdown would also be possible. With the introduction of the Xbox One solo version without the external Kinect control on June 9, 2014, Microsoft tries to minimize this point of criticism.

At the beginning, the TV integration advertised by Microsoft could only be used with a loss of quality in countries in which a 50 Hertz signal is used for TV transmissions. The Xbox One output image signals exclusively at 60 Hertz. A 50 Hz signal fed in via the HDMI input therefore had to be extrapolated to 60 Hz. This resulted in image jerks. This could be avoided by switching the frame rate depending on the source, but Microsoft has not implemented this. For this reason, DVDs cannot be played back without a loss in quality. The error has now been fixed with a system update released in March 2014.

The fast, but only 32 MB eSRAM in the Xbox One caused further criticism shortly after the console was introduced. It is currently (as of February 2014) not possible for game developers to pass resolutions of 1080p (1920 × 1080 pixels) through the memory at 60 frames per second without great effort. The 32 MB eSRAM is too tight for a data stream of 124.4 megapixels per second. For this reason, previous games for the Xbox One have mostly appeared in lower resolutions (720p, 900p) in order not to break the limit of 60 frames per second. Even games that have not yet been released but have been announced will mostly not appear in 1080p if the frame rate is 60 frames per second. An updated version of the Xbox One Development Kit , which Microsoft has been making available to developers since the end of 2014 and which enables improved access to the eSRAM, is intended to help.
