Need for Speed: Rivals (often abbreviated NfS: Rivals or NfS: R ) ( English for " Need for Speed: Rivals ") is a racing game from the US game publisher Electronic Arts . It is the 20th installment in the Need-for-Speed series and the first series installment to be released for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One . In addition, the game appeared for the previous consoles Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 as well as Windows . In the game, the rivalry between the law enforcement officers ( police , later also the FBI ) and the street racers is in the foreground.

action

In Need for Speed: Rivals , the player slips into two roles: that of the racing driver "Zephyr" and that of the (unknown by name) cop, later also as "F-8" or "Fate" (German fate).

Racer

As a racer you slip into the role of the experienced street racer Zephyr, who uploads videos of how he shakes off cops and causes accidents.

When the street racer known as the F-8 starts destroying other racers, Zephyr concludes that he is a cop and breaks into the police depot in the mission "In Wolf's Clothing", steals a Koenigsegg Agera R and sprays it with him his trademark. He then starts destroying cops and VRT units.

In the final mission, "The Big Tour", in which Zephyr calls on all racers to take part in this race, he is finally stopped by F-8 and a police blockade, with which he collides and flies through the air for several meters. Contrary to the assumption of the TV broadcaster RCNN (Redview County News Network) that he did not survive the accident, one hears him the sentence from the opening credits ("I am the reality show. The 15 minutes you will never have." “) Talk and start the engine of the crashed car while it is up to the player to imagine what happens afterwards.

Cop

In the cop career you are initially a patrol officer and have the task of patrolling. When the police violence penetrates the public and at the same time the actions of the street racers become more and more risky, the mayor decides to call in the fictional Vehicle Response Team ( VRT ) of the Federal Bureau of Investigation ( FBI ) and to put all cops, including the player, on leave Initiate proceedings for "gross misconduct".

With his urge to destroy the racers, he steals an Enzo Ferrari from the racers and pretends to be a street racer under the code name " F-8 " ( fate ). He starts destroying the racers and eventually decides to join the VRT to get more resources to destroy the street racers.

In the final mission, "The Big Tour", in which Zephyr calls on all racers to take part in this race, the VRT tells him to stop Zephyr. He also succeeds when Zephyr and his car collide with a police blockade. F-8s Enzo is also badly damaged and, according to the RCNN, dismissed from the VRT for "reckless behavior".

In the end credits, in which it seems as if the hype about street racers is over, F-8, who is now a street racer himself and has taken Zephyr's place as the top street racer, uploads a video in which he calls on all racers to do so To race.

AllDrive

For the first time in a Need for Speed , AllDrive, similar to Forza Motorsport 5 , offers the possibility of competing in single player mode not against an AI , but against other human drivers - who can act either as cops or racers. It also often happens to the player that some opponents are AIs and some opponents are other players.

However, you still have the option of switching off AllDrive and - as usual - competing against an AI as an opponent.

vehicles

In the game you have the option of unlocking vehicles and - in the racing career - buying them with the speed points you have received. In the cop career mode you get the vehicles for free.

The player can drive the following vehicles in the game:

IGN k. A. 8/10 8/10 8/10

The versions of the game received mostly positive reviews across all platforms it was released on.

GamePro praised the online mode and the extensive solo campaign, as well as the graphics of the version for Xbox One and PS4. On the less powerful Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 consoles, however, badly pixelated environments, weaker textures and stuttering were criticized.

The Youtuber and video game critic Timm Litwinczuk, however, rated the game largely negatively. His conclusion on the technical quality and game design was particularly bad. Because of the integrated online mode, the game does not offer a pause function, which, according to Litwinczuk, has been standard in video games without an online function since the 1980s.
