Need for Speed: Nitro ( NFSN for short ) is the 14th part of the Need for Speed computer racing game series published by Electronic Arts . The game was developed by EA Montreal and was first released in the US on November 3rd, 2009. The publication in Europe followed on November 6, 2009. The game was only released for the Nintendo Wii and Nintendo DS platforms . In contrast to other parts of the Need-for-Speed series, it is a version specially tailored for the casual gamer market.
Gameplay
General
In contrast to the recently published Need for Speed: Shift , which focuses on realism, the gameplay of Need for Speed: Nitro is much more arcade-oriented, i.e. more action-oriented. Most illegal street races are held in nitro , which can lead to car chases with the police.
There are different racing modes in Need for Speed: Nitro . In addition to classic circuit races over several laps, there are also elimination races, races in which certain lap times must be undercut and races in which several measuring points must be passed at the highest possible speed. There are also classic drift and drag races.
A novelty in this part are the powerups. In this way, damage to the car during the race can be repaired, which would otherwise have negative effects such as loss of speed and the deprivation of the ability to activate a nitro speed boost. The police can also use power-ups to draw the attention of other drivers. The already mentioned effects of damage on the driving behavior of cars are also a novelty.
stretch
The nitro races take place on public roads in five different locations around the world. These are Cairo, Dubai, Madrid, Rio de Janeiro and Singapore.

reception
|
The game was received rather mediocre in the trade press. It achieved a Metascore of 70% (Wii) and 69% (Nintendo DS) on the Metacritic.com site . The version for the Wii is praised, among other things, for the fluid display, the excellent sense of speed and the easy-to-understand optical tuning. In the DS version, the possible stunt performances and the support of the Rumble Pack are praised. Both versions are praised for having an extensive fleet and a good selection of different racing modes. The criticism is that there is no longer any performance tuning, the AI has an extreme rubber band effect and that there is no online mode.
