The Encounter Bay ( German  "Bay of encounter" ) is located on the southern central coast of South Australia , about 100 kilometers south of Adelaide .

The bay forms a large curve on the coastline south of the Fleurieu Peninsula . It stretches along the south coast along Newland Head to Cape Jaffa , either over a distance of 180 kilometers. Settlements along the bay are Victor Harbor , Port Elliot , Middleton , Goolwa, and Kingston . The Murray River , Inman and Hindmarsh Rivers flow into the bay. A long strip of coastline formed by the Murray River is part of Coorong National Park . Granite Island near Victor Harbor is connected to the mainland by an artificial dam .

The bay is named after the encounter between the Englishman Matthew Flinders and the French Nicolas Baudin on April 8, 1802. The two explorers measured the Australian coastline on behalf of their countries. The meeting between the two scientists was peaceful, although their countries were at war at the time. The ships were moored together, and the explorers exchanged their knowledge. The Baudin expedition was considered extremely successful - more than 100,000 species were collected, of which 2,500 were newly discovered.
