Need for Speed III: Hot Pursuit (short NFSHP ) is the third part of of Electronic Arts published Need for Speed series and was published on 30 September 1998 for PlayStation and Windows .
Versions
Need for Speed III was sold in different versions worldwide. In the Australian variant, for. B. include the local muscle cars Ford Falcon GT and HSV GTS. There is also a Wal-Mart edition that was only sold in branches of the supermarket chain in the USA. This also contained an image of the pace car based on the Corvette that was used in the Indianapolis 500 in 1998. Also included in this version was the MRCCartool program , an editor to redesign the game's cars. This made it possible for the first time to load self-made cars into the game. The CarCAD program was developed by fans of the series on the basis of this program , which enabled the development of numerous modified cars available on the Internet for the third and fourth part.
The PlayStation version of the game is fundamentally different from the PC version, so the menu structure is already different. In the version for the PlayStation there is also the possibility to choose between "arcade-heavy" and "simulation-heavy" controls, which is not possible in the version for the computer.
Gameplay
Compared to its predecessor, there is a larger selection of mobile trolleys. There is also the option of downloading additional vehicles and routes from the Internet. The game offers four types of races:
Single race
In individual races it is possible to race without the police. The route, opponents and conditions can be freely selected, additional help such as B. to activate automatic braking or displaying the ideal line.
Hot pursuit
In the eponymous mode, Hot Pursuit , the player and his opponents are followed by the police. This tries to force the car to stop by pushing it away, blocking the road or using nail strips . If a driver is arrested after multiple warnings, he will be eliminated from the race. In the PC version it is also possible to play on the side of the police.
knockout
The knockout is a racing series with eight participants, in which the last driver is removed after a race and therefore no longer takes part in the tournament. The knockout is won by the player who is left at the end of the series.
competition
In the tournament, races are held on eight tracks and points are awarded based on the placement at the end of each race. The driver who has the most points at the end of the tournament wins.
