Jaguar X100 is the internal name for a generation of the XK8 and XKR models produced by the British car manufacturer Jaguar from spring 1996 to summer 2005 .

The XK8 was more in the tradition of the E-Type than the restrained XJS .

history

The XK8 was presented at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1996 . The sports car was offered in two body styles, coupé and convertible, and optionally with a naturally aspirated engine (as XK8) or a supercharged engine (as XKR). The latter feature a rear spoiler lip, ventilation slots in the bonnet, a grille with a grille look and larger wheels. The bodies were built and painted in the Castle Bromwich factory near Birmingham , after which they were taken to Browns Lane in the Coventry suburb of Allesley for final production .

Engines

Both models have the AJ-V8 developed in Whitley with a displacement of 4.0 liters and 32 valves, which in the standard version has an output of 209 kW (284 hp) (internal designation AJ26 ). With the compressor introduced in spring 1998, the output is 267 kW (363 hp). The top speed is electronically limited to 250 km / h on both, accelerating from 0-100 km / h in 6.7 s (XK8) or 5.4 s (XKR).

The engines were built in Bridgend in South Wales and installed in Browns Lane. All engine functions are electronically monitored. A five-speed automatic transmission takes care of the power transmission. The engine is installed above the front wheels, but the weight is evenly distributed on both axles.

In summer 2002 (model year 2003, from VIN A30645, internal designation X103) the displacement was increased to 4.2 liters and the output increased to 219 kW (298 hp) for the XK8 and 290 kW (395 hp) for the XKR. Numerous assistance systems and technical changes accompany the conversion to the new engine (internally referred to as AJ34), such as B. the new and extremely stable six-speed automatic transmission from ZF 6HP26, larger brake discs and an emergency brake assistant. The AJ34 is considered to be extremely reliable, with quite a few models with a mileage of over 500,000 km.

optics

"Master model"

The original face of the Jaguar X100 is externally recognizable at first glance through the round side headlights that have been moved into the apron. The air intake of the XK model was characterized by the two vertical "teeth" (dampers) and a chrome-plated cross strut, that of the XKR by a grille that was behind the teeth. From the front to the rear fender there was a door protection strip in the middle, which was not removed until the second facelift in 2004.

Facelift 2001 (X102)

The 2001 facelift was very gentle. The clear glass fog lights that have slid forward and give the X100 a more modern look are recognizable at first glance. On closer inspection, you can see that the “inner workings” of the headlights have also been changed. The 2001 facelift was rolled out without changing the engine. The introduction of the 4.2L engine and numerous other technical changes took place in mid-2003 without a (real) facelift.

Like the front, the rear became more elegant. The biggest modification was the taillights. This lost visual depth, especially due to the lenses and reflectors visible in the clear glass. At the same time, the taillights were surrounded by a chrome strip. The carrier of the license plate light was optically separated and got “Jaguar” embossed. To the chagrin of many enthusiasts, the beautiful round instruments on the center console disappeared inside in favor of a SATNAV system. As updates are no longer offered, this navigation system can only be used to a limited extent.

The seats now had adjustable headrests as standard (these were integrated in the "original models"). The leather is no longer quilted lengthways, but crossways.

Facelift 2004 (X104)

The second facelift took place in 2004. The front apron was significantly redesigned and pulled down, and a second air inlet was provided. The two “teeth” on the XKR have slipped behind the grille. Side skirts, which are optically drawn into the front apron, reinforce the significantly wider impression of these models. The license plate light cover is now chrome-plated as standard. The XKR has a modified end spoiler and is characterized by four tailpipes. The models of this facelift are now being traded significantly higher in price than the two predecessors. This is due on the one hand to the sophisticated technology (smooth running of the 4.2L engine and stable automatic transmission), and on the other hand to the pleasing appearance. The small numbers that were produced last year do the rest. The special models of the Final Editions are even more expensive.

landing gear

The front wheels are suspended from double wishbones , coil springs , telescopic shock absorbers and anti- roll bars in a cast aluminum subframe . The rear wheels are guided by forked lower wishbones and over the drive shafts that replace the upper links. The suspension is carried out by means of coil springs, telescopic shock absorbers (two-stage with the XKR) and anti-roll bar also at the rear. All four wheels have hydraulically operated disc brakes with a vacuum servo and a stability control that is controlled by the engine management .

Furnishing

The computer-controlled CATS suspension system ( C omputer A ctive T echnology S uspension) is standard on the XKR and optional on the XK8 . It includes electronically controlled sensor dampers, 18-inch wheels and low-profile tires (asymmetrical at the rear). All models have power steering . Front and side airbags and belt tensioners were part of the basic equipment. Reinforced straps in the cabin area, side impact protection and crumple zones ensure more safety . The panes are frameless.

In the interior it was possible to choose between the equipment versions Classic and Sport . The Classic equipment includes walnut burl wood on the dashboard, leather seats, leather steering wheel and gear lever made of wood, while the sport equipment features a steering wheel and gear lever in black leather and a dashboard with maple grain. Both seats, like the steering wheel, are electrically adjustable, and individual positions can be saved.

There is air conditioning, a stereo and a device for a mobile phone. The XK Cabrio also has an electrically operated, lined fabric roof that opens and closes within 20 seconds and automatically locks into the window frame.

Special models

During the nine-year construction period, Jaguar brought a number of special limited editions for sale. The engine was unchanged compared to the production models. The special models were characterized primarily by visual changes (special colors, special veneers for the dashboard) and by the fact that special equipment of the normal models became standard equipment.

Silverstone

This model was presented in 2000 for Jaguar's return to Formula 1. The first Silverstone carried the VIN A06139. Many equipment features were only introduced later in the series models, such as BCATS, 20-inch tires, Brembo brake discs. "Silverstone" was written in red on the growler on the bonnet. The engine was still the 4-liter variant of the first series.

XKR100

A special model limited to 500 pieces was released for the 100th birthday of. The first XKR100 carried the VINA23312. The model had Recaro seats, CATS, 20 inch BBS Montreal rims and Brembo brakes as standard.

Carbon fiber edition

For the English market, i.e. only as a right-hand drive (RHD), the carbon fiber edition, which was limited to 100 pieces, was launched in 2004 (start September 2004). Like all special series, the carbon fiber edition also had numerous equipment features that were included as standard equipment in the standard model at an additional cost. This includes the eponymous dashboard, the center console and the frame around the carbon window regulators or the Recaro sports seats. The Jaguar growler on the radiator was green. The "Final Editions"

Many special models were created in 2005 (model year 2006 "2006MY") when, on the one hand, sales declined and, on the other hand, a concept vehicle of the successor (internal name X150) had already been presented as an Advanced Lightweight. The models listed, which were commonly grouped under the name "Final Edition" (only the XKR 4.2-S models had this name), started with VIN A45289.

XKR 4.2-S (Final Edition [FE])

The "Final Edition" was announced at the Geneva Motor Show on March 1, 2005 (internal name "X105"). The Final Edition is characterized by extensive standard equipment. Almost everything that was otherwise available as optional equipment was installed as standard. There were also visual changes. As standard there were 19 inch "Atlas" rims (XK8) and three-part 20 inch BBS "Perseus" rims (XKR8) as well as "soft grain leather" (at first glance you can see the straight transverse seams compared to the otherwise recognize curved). Recaro seats were part of the special equipment on these models. The models had a white bordered growler on the hood (with a checkered flag pattern). The checkered flag can also be found on the door sills. The dashboard was made of elm wood (XK8) or carbon (XKR8) as standard. The XKR was equipped with 2 twin tailpipes, perforated, internally ventilated Brembo brake discs and standard red brake calipers. The Final Edition was available in all colors, but four new ones, which were limited to 200: Copper Black Metallic, Frost Blue Metallic, Bay Blue Metallic and Satin Silver Metallic. The special model in these four colors is therefore one of the rarest models of the X100 that have been built. In addition to the Recaro seats, the optional extras, which are subject to a surcharge, included the adaptive cruise control ACC, interior monitoring including glass breakage sensors and an integrated garage door opener. The XKR 4.2-S-Edition was available as both LHD and RHD. The last X100 left the Jaguar factory in May 2005. The models produced were also sold afterwards, so that final edition models with a registration date of 2006 can also be found.

XKR 4.2 (Victory Edition)

The Victory Edition is technically and optically identical to the "Final Edition". The Victory Edition was offered on the North American market. The name is derived from a tribute to the four-time win of the North American Trans-Am series.

XKR 4.2-S (Celebration Edition)

Just as the Victory Edition was unchanged from the Final Edition, so was the Celebration Edition, which was offered on the German market with 50 convertibles from April 2005 (premiere at the Leipzig auto show AMI). There was no coupe version of the Celebration Edition.

XKR 4.2 (Stratstone Edition)

Stratstone Edition

Another limited version of the last model series - and at the same time the most exclusive with only 30 pieces - was the one that was manufactured exclusively for the dealer Stratstone and its customers. All models were aimed at the British market and were therefore only available as right-hand drive (RHD). Compared to the other XKR 4.2, the Stratstone models are characterized by an even sportier appearance (the side skirts had been modified) and looked more aggressive. The same applies to the modified rear apron including diffuser (also Arden). The mufflers and the aluminum rims were also exclusive to the Stratstone Edition.
