The X-Type was a mid-range car from the British manufacturer Jaguar , which was produced from April 2001 to December 2009.
General
The X-Type came on the market in June 2001 as a sedan (in Great Britain: Saloon ). It was Jaguar's first medium-sized vehicle.
The construction was based on the CDW27 floor pan from the Ford Mondeo '01 . This use of the platform allowed inexpensive and high-quality production compared to Jaguar's own mid-range platform .
In order not to deviate (completely) from the rear-wheel drive concept typical of the brand, the X-Type was initially brought onto the market exclusively with all-wheel drive. It was not until mid-2002 that basic models with pure front-wheel drive (only with the smaller 2.0-l petrol or 2.0-l diesel engines ) were added, which fans of the brand criticized as a break with the traditional design principles of the British.
In January 2004, followed to complement the as Estate called combination model .
Facelift
Jaguar had to deal with allegations of badge engineering early on because of the X-Type , but these are not applicable in this case. Despite some of the technology used jointly with the Ford Mondeo, all parts have been specially developed for Jaguar. The engines, made in America, were designed exclusively for Jaguar in Great Britain, and sharing platforms is only an advantage in terms of production technology and is common with many manufacturers (see PL45 (1996), PL71, and many others).
In November 2007 the X-Type was revised. The front as well as the rear and the rear lights have been slightly modified. The old 2.0 D was replaced by a new 2.2 D. This had an output of 107 kW (145 hp), complied with the Euro 4 emissions standard thanks to the particulate filter and could be combined with an automatic transmission for the first time.
The more powerful X-Type models with V6 petrol engines were equipped with all-wheel drive as standard .
After more than eight years of production and a good 350,000 vehicles sold, production of the X-Type was discontinued at the end of 2009 without a successor.
It was not until mid-2015 that Jaguar's middle class was reoccupied with the XE .
Engine variants
The X-Type was available from June 2001 to December 2009 with the following engine variants:
- 2.0 V6: V-six-cylinder petrol engine with 2099 cm³ displacement, 115 kW (156 PS), 03/2002-07/2005
- 2.5 V6: V-six-cylinder petrol engine with 2495 cm³ displacement, 144 kW (196 PS), 04/2001–03/2009
- 3.0 V6: V-six-cylinder petrol engine with 2967 cm³ displacement, 169 kW (230 PS), 04/2001–12/2009
- 2.0 D: in-line four-cylinder diesel with 1998 cm³ displacement, 96 kW (130 PS), 07/2003–07/2005
- 2.2 D: In-line four-cylinder diesel DPF with 2198 cm³ displacement, 107 kW (145 PS), 01/2007–12/2009
- 2.2 D: in-line four-cylinder diesel with a displacement of 2198 cm³, 114 kW (155 PS), 07/2005–12/2006
Equipment lines
The X-Type was offered in three equipment variants:
- Classic (only 2.2 liters of diesel)
- Sports
- Executive (all engines)
In addition, there was at times the "Le Mans" variant, which was supposed to be reminiscent of Jaguar's racing successes at this legendary race and had some exclusive equipment details (black mesh grille, R-Performance 18-inch alloy wheels and a special "Le Mans" logo at the stern).

Registration numbers
Between 2001 and 2010 a total of 14,044 Jaguar X-Types were newly registered in the Federal Republic of Germany. 2002 was the most successful sales year with 2,366 units.
Others
- On all X-Type models, the speedometer scale began at 10 km / h (30, 50, 70, 90, 110 ...), also known as the "French speedometer scale", instead of 20 km / h (40, 60, 80, 100 ...) ).
- The 2.0-liter diesel engines (96 kW / 130 PS) came from Ford. They are almost identical to the units built in the Ford Mondeo II with the designation TDCI (Turbodiesel Common Rail Injection ).
- In April 2007, among others, the Jaguar X-Type 2.2 D was recommended by the Verkehrsclub Deutschland (VCD) as part of the purchase advice for climate-friendly cars (“Status” category).
- The X-Type was criticized in the trade press for its lack of reliability in terms of engine and gearbox damage, the above-average maintenance costs and the high depreciation.
