The Jaguar 420 was a sporty four-door sedan that Jaguar launched in 1966 to fill the niche between the Jaguar S-Type and the large Mark X sedan .

Model history

The model represented a link between the classic Jaguar Mark II and the drive technology of the Mark X / 420 G. Technically, the car largely corresponded to the S-Type presented three years earlier, which in turn was a modification of the Mark II, but not for reasons of space the 4.2 liter six cylinder of the Mk. X could be equipped. The 420 received a longer front end so that this engine could now also be added. Visually, the 420 only had the passenger cell in common with the Mark II. He took over the rear section of the S-Type, which was already modeled on that of the Mark X / 420 G. While the front section of the S-Type still corresponded to the Mark II, on the 420 it was now also adapted to the Mark X / 420 G, so that the 420 looked like a "Mark X with the middle section of a Mark II" or simply just the smaller edition of the 420 G was.

The 4235 cm³ six-cylinder in-line engine was modified in detail for the 420. While the engine in the Jaguar E-Type and the Mark X had a triple SU carburetor, the 420 only had a double carburetor and therefore had a lower output of 183 kW. Jaguar offered a newly developed automatic from BorgWarner or the in-house developed four-speed gearbox with center shift and optional overdrive , which had been developed for the S-Type in 1965. The 420 differed from the S-Type in that it had more powerful brakes and revised power steering. The top speed was 198 km / h.

Daimler Sovereign

The vehicle was also sold as the Daimler Sovereign . While the Jaguar 420 was offered until 1968, the Daimler Sovereign remained in the range until 1969 and was therefore sold in parallel with the new Jaguar XJ 6 for a short time. The Daimler technically corresponded completely to the Jaguar; in particular - unlike Daimler's Mark II variant, the Daimler 250 V8 - it was not offered with Daimler's own 2.5-liter eight-cylinder. However, there should have been some conversions afterwards by external workshops. Externally, the Sovereign differed from the 420 by the ribbed radiator grille and upscale equipment.

Production data

The Jaguar was manufactured much more frequently than the significantly more expensive Daimler Sovereign. The left-hand drive Sovereign version is the rarest of the model family:

model construction time Right hand drive Left hand drive
Jaguar 420 1966-1968 7172 2629
Daimler Sovereign 1966-1969 5476 355
