Jaguar Racing was a British Formula 1 racing team based in Milton Keynes, England . It emerged in late 1999 from the Stewart Grand Prix Team , which had previously been entirely purchased by Ford Motor Company . At the end of 2004, Ford left Formula 1 and sold the team to the Austrian energy drink manufacturer Red Bull , which has been participating in the world championship as Red Bull Racing since 2005 .

Since the 2016/17 season , the team has also been competing in the FIA Formula E Championship under the name Jaguar Racing .

history

Since the traditional British car brand Jaguar was acquired by the US car manufacturer Ford in the 1990s, the Jaguar Formula 1 team has to be seen as a Ford factory racing team. The Jaguar brand was placed in Formula 1 for its sporting tradition and for the purpose of reviving its legend. Since Ford was also the main owner of the British engine manufacturer Cosworth , the Jaguar racing cars were always powered by Cosworth units in order to make better use of group-wide synergy effects .

Jaguar Racing participated in a total of 85 Grand Prix in the Formula 1 World Championship. The team was not destined to succeed: first starting positions, fastest race laps or even Grand Prix victories were missing - not to mention world championships. A Jaguar driver only climbed onto the podium twice: Eddie Irvine finished third in Monaco in 2001 and Italy in 2002 . Once a Jaguar driver was on the front row: Mark Webber surprisingly qualified second in 2004 in Malaysia .

The history of the team was marked by frequent personnel changes. Team bosses, technical directors and chief designers were hired and dismissed, and there was also a fluctuation among the drivers. In five years, eight pilots drove the Jaguar racers, which were generally too slow and too fragile. Former Formula 1 world champion Niki Lauda , who was initially engaged as a consultant in February 2001, became team boss six months later as Bobby Rahal's successor . But even under his direction, the track record did not improve, in November 2002 Lauda had to leave.

Due to a lack of success, Ford sold the team to Red Bull in late 2004 . Since the 2005 season it has been competing under the name Red Bull Racing .

FIA Formula E Championship

Jaguar I-Type

In December 2015, the Jaguar brand, now owned by Tata Motors, announced that it would join the FIA Formula E championship as the successor to the Trulli Formula E team . At the same time, the cooperation with Williams Advanced Engineering , the manufacturer of the standard accumulators for Formula E vehicles, was announced.

Jaguar decided to enter the championship as a designer and developed its own drive unit. Adam Carroll and Mitch Evans were hired as drivers for the Jaguar I-Type 1 car for the FIA Formula E Championship 2016/17 . James Barclay acted as team principal. The team finished the season with 27 points in tenth and last place.

In the 2017/18 season the team competed with the Jaguar I-TYPE 2 and the drivers Evans and Nelson Piquet junior . Evans took a podium finish, and at the end of the season Jaguar finished sixth in the team standings.

In the 2018/19 season , Jaguar initially competed again with the driver duo Evans and Piquet. However, Piquet was replaced by Alex Lynn after the Sanya E-Prix . Evans scored the team's first win at the Rome E-Prix and finished fifth in the drivers' standings at the end of the season, Lynn finished 18th and Piquet 22nd. The team finished seventh with 116 points in the team standings.
