Tom Blomqvist (born November 30, 1993 in Cambridge , England ) is a Swedish - British racing driver . He competed in the European Formula 3 championship from 2012 to 2014 . He started in the DTM between 2015 and 2017 .

While Blomqvist initially started with a Swedish license, he has been participating in racing since August 2010 with a British license. His father is the world rally champion Stig Blomqvist .

Career

Blomqvist began his motorsport career in karting in 2003 and was active in this sport until 2008. In 2009 he switched to the single-seater racing and was with a win and five podium finishes third in the Swedish Formula Renault . He also came third in the NEZ Formula Renault. Then Blomqvist took part in the winter series of the British Formula Renault. He started two races for Fortec Motorsport , won both and set the fastest lap each time. He was seventh in the ranking. With his victories, at the age of 15, he became the youngest ever winner in the British Formula Renault.

In 2010 he competed for Fortec Motorsport in the British Formula Renault. Initially, Blomqvist started with a Swedish license. After the first half of the season, Blomqvist changed his license and started with a British license. His first championship victory followed a race weekend later. With three wins and a total of 12 podiums in 19 races, he won the championship with 465 to 459 points ahead of Lewis Williamson . At the age of 16 years and 313 days, Blomqvist became the youngest champion of the British Formula Renault to date. He also started as a guest starter in a Pacific Formula BMW race and finished in third place.

In 2011 Blomqvist switched to Performance Racing in the German Formula 3 Cup . In his debut race he achieved his first podium finish in second place. His first win followed later in the season. On the seventh race weekend he had a serious accident at the Lausitzring in which he broke his third lumbar vertebra. His season was ended prematurely. In the overall standings he was finally in sixth place. In 2012, Blomqvist was sponsored by McLaren . Blomqvist received a cockpit in the Formula 3 Euro Series at ma-con Motorsport 2012 and was also entitled to points in the European Formula 3 Championship . Blomqvist finished seventh in the Formula 3 Euro Series with two third places as the best results. In the European Formula 3 championship he also reached seventh place. Here a second place was his best result. In addition, Blomqvist was active for EuroInternational in the German Formula 3 Cup in 2012 and was used when his involvement in the Formula 3 Euro Series allowed it. Blomqvist won five races, making him the driver with the most wins, behind overall winner Jimmy Eriksson . In the overall standings, he was fifth.

In 2013 , Blomqvist received a cockpit in the European Formula 3 championship at EuroInternational. He was also accepted into the Red Bull funding program. Blomqvist's best results were three third places. As in the previous year, he finished the season in seventh place in the overall standings. After the end of the season, Red Bull ended its promotion. In 2014 Blomqvist stayed in the European Formula 3 Championship and switched to Jagonya Ayam with Carlin . The team was mentored by Carlin and funded by his teammate Sean Gelael's family . In addition to his role as a driver, Blomqvist also acted as a mentor for his teammates Gelael and Antonio Giovinazzi . Blomqvist won six races and stood on the podium 15 times. As the best driver with a Volkswagen engine, he improved to second place in the drivers' standings. With 420 to 478 points he was defeated by the master Esteban Ocon .

In 2015 Blomqvist switched to the DTM . He received a BMW cockpit from Racing Bart Mampaey and chose 31 as his starting number. At the 14th race in Oschersleben he achieved his first DTM victory. He finished his debut season in 14th place overall. In 2016 Blomqvist stayed with Racing Bart Mampaey in the DTM. He finished second four times. In the overall standings, he improved to sixth place. He was the second-best BMW driver behind overall winner Marco Wittmann . Also in 2017 he stayed with Mampaey. Despite two pole positions, he did not get beyond 17th place overall with 25 points.

On December 16, 2017, it was announced that Blomqvist had switched to the FIA Formula E Championship for Team Andretti Autosport , which is closely associated with BMW, with immediate effect . This was also linked to his retirement as a driver from the DTM. After he was exchanged in favor of Kamui Kobayashi at the season opener , he made his debut in the Marrakech E-Prix in the racing series. After six races, however, the team replaced him with Stéphane Sarrazin . At the end of the season he finished 20th in the drivers' championship. For the new season he no longer received a contract as a regular driver.

In 2018 , Blomqvist won the Spa-Francorchamps 24-hour race with Walkenhorst Motorsport, a BMW customer team .

Blomqvist's father, Stig, is a rally driver who won the World Rally Championship in 1984.
