Sean Gelael
Sean Gelael (born November 1, 1996 in Jakarta ) is an Indonesian automobile racing driver . He has been competing in the FIA Formula 2 Championship (formerly GP2 series) since 2015 .
Career
Gelael began his motorsport career in rallying , in which he was active from 2007 to 2009. In 2010 he switched to karting , which he practiced until 2012. In 2012 Gelael made his debut in formula racing . He competed for Eurasia Motorsport in the Formula Pilota China Series . He won the season finale and finished fourth in the drivers' championship with a total of six podium finishes. His teammate Antonio Giovinazzi , who has received financial support from Gelael's family since this year, won the championship. In addition, Gelael took part in a Formula Abarth event as a guest starter.
In 2013 Gelael moved to Europe and competed for Double R Racing in the European Formula 3 championship . A 13th place was his best result. In addition, Gelael took part in the British Formula 3 Championship for Double R Racing in 2013 . With three third places as the best results, he finished the season in eighth place, while his team-mate Giovinazzi was runner-up. In 2014 Gelael stayed in the European Formula 3 championship and received a cockpit with Jagonya Ayam with Carlin . Carlin was responsible for the team's races, Gelael's family financed the team. In addition to Giovinazzi, Tom Blomqvist became his teammate, who also acted as a mentor for the two. While Blomqvist and Giovinazzi won races, a sixth place was Gelael's best result. He finished the season in 18th place in the drivers' championship. In addition, he made three guest starts for Carlin in the British Formula 3 Championship, where he was twice second and once third.
In 2015 Gelael stayed with Carlin and switched to Formula Renault 3.5 . He finished 20th overall at the end of the season. Internally, he was defeated by his teammate Tom Dillmann with 7 to 122 points . In addition, Gelael took part in some races of the GP2 series for Carlin in 2015 . In the winter of 2015/16 Gelael and Giovinazzi drove two races in the Asian Le Mans Series (AsLMS) for Jagonya Ayam with Eurasia . The duo achieved two victories and came third in the LMP2 classification. In 2016 Gelael competed as a regular driver in the GP2 series for Pertamina Campos Racing . With a second place in Spielberg , he achieved a podium placement. Internally he was defeated by Mitch Evans with 24 to 90 points and was 15th in the drivers' standings. In addition, Gelael was active in endurance sports. First he contested a race in the European Le Mans Series (ELMS) for the SMP Racing team, which is supported by AF Corse . He then went to the last three races of the 2016 FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) for Extreme Speed Motorsports . He was 31st in the drivers' championship.
Gelael moved to Arden in 2017 and stayed in the GP2 series, which had been renamed the FIA Formula 2 Championship in the winter . He achieved his best result with a fifth place. He finished the championship with 17 points in 15th place. He also competed in Formula 2 in 2018 , but switched to Pertamina Prema Theodore Racing , for which he also competed in 2019 . In 2019 he finished 17th in the overall ranking. Despite a less than successful season, he was able to show off with a fastest race lap in Monte Carlo. For the 2020 season, Gelael switched to the winner of the 2019 DAMS Motorsport team championship , which is his sixth season in the fifth team. His teammate is the Briton Daniel Ticktum .
Personal
Gelael is the son of the Indonesian actress Rini S. Bono and the entrepreneur Ricardo Gelael, who used to compete as a rally driver himself. Ricardo Gelael's fast-food companies, who sell Kentucky Fried Chicken in Indonesia, are also often sponsors of Sean Gelael's racing cars.
