Changes 2020

Technical regulations

For the 2020 season, the tire manufacturer Pirelli announced the introduction of 18-inch tires, which will be used for the first time in the official test drives in Bahrain (March 1-3). The 18-inch tires will also be used in Formula 1 , but not until the 2021 season.

Teams and drivers

All teams and drivers use the 2018 Dallara F2 chassis , Renault - Mecachrome engines and Pirelli tires . Numerous drivers are also part of a Formula 1 racing team's junior program, and some of them are also active as test and replacement drivers.

Changes in the drivers in detail

With Jack Aitken ( Campos Racing ), Mick Schumacher ( Prema Racing ) and Guanyu Zhou ( UNI-Virtuosi Racing ), the best rookie of the past season , only three drivers remained with their respective teams. Aitken's new teammate will be Guilherme Samaia , who competed in the Euroformula Open in 2019 . Robert Shwartzman, the reigning champion of the FIA Formula 3 Championship and one of a total of nine rookies in Formula 2, will drive alongside Schumacher . Shwartzman will succeed Sean Gelael , who will be driving for the French team DAMS in 2020 , which won the team championship last year. Gelael's teammate will be Dan Ticktum , who last played in the Japanese Super Formula . Both replace both Sérgio Sette Câmara from and Nicholas Latifi , who will drive for Williams Racing in Formula 1 in 2020 . Meanwhile, Zhou is supported by Callum Ilott , who drove for Charouz Racing System last year .

Nyck de Vries , the reigning champion, has to leave the series and ART Grand Prix because according to the regulations he is unable to defend his title athletically. Instead, de Vries will drive in the FIA Formula E championship for Mercedes-Benz for 2020 ; his old teammate Nikita Mazepin also left the team and joined the Hitech Grand Prix , which makes its debut in Formula 2 this year. Mazepin's new team-mate will be Luca Ghiotto , who finished third last year and is now being inherited by Ilott. With Marcus Armstrong , the reigning runner-up in the FIA Formula 3 Championship , and Christian Lundgaard, two rookies who drove in Formula 3 last season, will take over the vacant positions at the ART Grand Prix . Lundgaard had already covered a few kilometers in Formula 2 when he replaced Ralph Boschung at Trident at the 2019 season finale in Abu Dhabi .

Carlin has the commitments of the two Formula 3 drivers Yuki Tsunoda and Jehan Daruvala a completely new set with Rookies riders. Both are also part of Red Bull Racing's youth development program, replacing both Louis Delétraz and Nobuharu Matsushita . Delétraz returns to Charouz Racing System after a year with Carlin and becomes the new team-mate of Pedro Piquet , another rookie from Formula 3 and at the same time replacing Juan Manuel Correa . Matsushita and Felipe Drugovich will also form a completely new driver duo at MP Motorsport after Jordan King and Mahaveer Raghunathan left the team at the end of last season. Incidentally, Arden International is going under the new name BWT HWA Racelab and with a new driver duo. After Artem Markelov replaced the late Anthoine Hubert on the last two race weekends of the FIA Formula 2 Championship 2019 , he got a full-time cockpit in the team for this season alongside Giuliano Alesi , who drove for Trident last season . The latter go to the start with the two pilots Roy Nissany and Marino Satō .

Racing calendar

In 2020, nine race weekends will be held so far (subject to change). All events take place in connection with the Formula 1 Grand Prix races.

Except for the event in Monaco (main race on Fridays and sprint races on Saturday), all main races take place on Saturdays and all sprint races on Sundays.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic , the races in Bahrain and Abu Dhabi have been postponed indefinitely and the races in the Netherlands, Monaco and Azerbaijan have been completely canceled. In addition, races in Mugello have been added to the calendar.
