Juan Manuel Correa
Juan Manuel Correa (born August 9, 1999 in Quito ) is an Ecuadorian - American racing driver . He has been competing in the FIA Formula 2 Championship since 2019 . After a serious accident on August 31, 2019 on the sidelines of the Belgian Grand Prix in Spa-Francorchamps , in which the Frenchman Anthoine Hubert was killed, Correa is in rehabilitation .
Career
Correa began his motorsport career in karting in 2008 , where he remained active until 2015. Among other things, he won the final of the Rotax-Max-Junioren-Challenge in 2013 and he finished fifth in the European Kart Championship in 2015.
2016 Correa moved to the single-seater racing and was the Prema Powerteam for the German Formula 4 Championship contracted. With a podium finish, he finished the season in tenth place overall. He also contested some races of the Italian Formula 4 championship in 2016 with the Prema Powerteam . He won three races and was sixth overall. In 2017 Correa stayed with Prema Powerteam in the German Formula 4 championship. He also made his debut for Jenzer Racing in the GP3 series , which he entered during the 2018 season.
In the 2019 season Correa rose to Formula 2 , where he competes with the Sauber Junior Team By Charouz.
During the race at the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps on August 31, 2019, he was involved in the fatal accident of Anthoine Hubert . After an evasive maneuver due to a blown tire by Giuliano Alesi at the exit of the Raidillon de l'Eau Rouge, Hubert hit the barrier, whereupon his vehicle was thrown back. Correa could not evade and caught Hubert's vehicle at a speed of around 270 km / h with his racing car. Despite immediate medical help, Hubert succumbed to his injuries in the hospital on the same day. Correa and Alesi were taken to a Liège hospital, where Correa was not in danger of death on the evening of the accident, but had broken legs and a spinal injury as a result of the accident. Alesi got away with no significant injuries and was not hospitalized.

Correa owns the nationalities of Ecuador and the United States . He starts primarily with a US racing license, but sometimes also with an Italian one .
