Yas Marina Circuit ( Arabic حلبة مرسى ياس, DMG Ḥalbat Marsā Yās ; partly also called Yas Island Circuit ) is a permanent racetrack completed in October 2009 on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi ( United Arab Emirates ). The first race there was the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix , the last race of the 2009 Formula 1 season , on November 1, 2009. This race also concluded the Formula 1 calendar in 2010 and 2014 to 2019. For 2020 it is once again planned as the last race of the season.
history
The racetrack designed by the German racetrack designer and civil engineer Hermann Tilke was originally planned as a temporary course and is 5.554 km long. The length of one lap on the racing line is 5.491 km. It has nine right-hand and twelve left-hand bends and is driven counter- clockwise . The absolute lap record is 1: 34.794, driven by Lewis Hamilton as pole time in qualifying 2018. The Formula 1 racing distance of 55 laps corresponds to a distance of 305.470 km. The projected maximum speed of the route is given for Formula 1 with 320 km / h, the average speed with 198 km / h. For other motorsport events, the course can be divided into two separate, independent routes of 3.15 and 2.36 km. A total of 41,000 grandstand seats are to be offered.
The first Formula 1 Grand Prix in Abu Dhabi also offered a novelty: for the first time, a Formula 1 race was started in daylight, continued at dusk and ended under artificial light. Another unique feature is that part of the pit exit runs below the racetrack and ascends into the main course from below. This unusual design was chosen so that the cars driving out of the pits can be positioned outside the ideal line and thus increase safety.
The route only has asphalt run-off zones with a total area of 59,100 m². There are no gravel beds as they used to be. The tire stacks that are common in many places as impact absorbers have also been replaced on this route by new, air-filled plastic barriers. Another novelty is a run-out zone that runs under the grandstand. Vehicles that have to enter this emergency exit due to driving errors, technical failure or excessive speed "dive" under the spectators seated there, which should offer them a more intense experience of racing. The longest straight of all Grand Prix circuits in 2014 is on this course between turns 7 and 8 and measures 1.2 kilometers.
A number of so-called "hanging curves" represent an increased difficulty factor for the motorsport pilots, the gradient of which shows away from the apex of the curve, which increases the lateral acceleration acting on the drivers and vehicles . Usually, racetrack curves banked a similarly steep turn built, enabling higher cornering speeds, as the bends counteract the centrifugal forces. The entire facility was opened on 23/24. October 2009 with races of the GP2 series .
The Yas Marina Circuit is structurally dominated by the Yas Hotel located directly on the course .
Ferrari World is also adjacent to the Yas Marina Circuit .
