The 2010 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix took place on November 14th at the Yas Marina Circuit on Yas Island and was the 19th and final race of the 2010 Formula 1 World Championship .

Reports

background

After the Brazilian Grand Prix , Fernando Alonso led the drivers' standings with eight points ahead of Mark Webber and 15 points ahead of Sebastian Vettel . Red Bull-Renault led unassailable in the constructors' championship with 48 points ahead of McLaren-Mercedes and 80 points ahead of Ferrari .

With Alonso, Webber, Vettel and Lewis Hamilton , before the last Grand Prix, for the first time in the history of Formula 1, four drivers still had the chance to win the world championship.

Sebastian Vettel (once) was the only former winner of this Grand Prix.

The Grand Prix was the last race for the tire manufacturer Bridgestone , which has been active in Formula 1 for the past 14 years. The Safety Car was provided by Mercedes-Benz for the 250th time in Abu Dhabi .

training

In the first free practice session, Vettel achieved the fastest lap ahead of the two McLaren drivers Hamilton and Jenson Button . At Lotus-Cosworth , Fairuz Fauzy took over the cockpit from Heikki Kovalainen for this training . In the second free practice session, Hamilton took the lead in front of Vettel and Alonso. In the third free practice, Vettel secured the last practice best time of the 2010 season. Webber was second ahead of Hamilton.

Qualifying

Alonso set the fastest lap in the first part of qualifying. The HRT , Virgin and Lotus pilots as well as Sébastien Buemi were eliminated. In the second segment, Vettel was the fastest pilot. The Force India and Sauber pilots as well as Jaime Alguersuari , Nico Hülkenberg and Robert Kubica were eliminated. Kubica did not reach the third section for the first time this season. The two Red Bull drivers are therefore the only drivers who always took part in the last qualifying stage.

In the last section, Vettel achieved pole position for the tenth time this season. Hamilton finished second ahead of Alonso. Webber started the race from position five.

Racing scene in the dark

At the start of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, Vettel kept the lead ahead of Hamilton. Alonso did not get off the grid optimally and fell behind Button. A little later Michael Schumacher turned and came to a stop in the opposite direction. Vitantonio Liuzzi could no longer evade and collided with Schumacher. Both pilots were uninjured, but retired. As the track was full of debris, the safety car had to go out. During the safety car phase, Nico Rosberg , Witali Petrow and Jaime Alguersuari completed their pit stop. After the restart, Vettel kept the lead and there were no shifts in the first six positions. At that time, Alonso was leading the virtual world championship standings.

Mark Webber (below) overtook Fernando Alonso

After Webber had touched a wall lightly, he made his pit stop and fell behind three pilots who had already made their pit stop. Although he achieved faster lap times with the new tires than at the front, he also had to overtake Alguersuari. Ferrari responded to Webber's stop by calling first Massa and then Alonso into the pits. While Massa fell behind Alguersuari, Alonso came out ahead of Webber. However, he was outside the points behind several pilots, of whom Rosberg and Petrow had already stopped. The three leading drivers, Vettel, Hamilton and Button, noticed the situation and decided to stay on the track longer in order not to fall behind Rosberg or Petrow. Ferrari also heard that Alonso had to make up two more positions and informed him that he had to drive past Petrov.

Winner and world champion Sebastian Vettel

However, were Renault this weekend fast on the straights and so it was hard for Alonso to make an attack on Petrov. In the meantime, Hamilton and Vettel also completed their stops. Hamilton fell behind Kamui Kobayashi and Kubica. While he was able to pass Kobayashi with relatively no problems, he too had problems overtaking Kubica's Renault. While Button stayed out longer and Vettel drove faster lap times in second place, Vettel's title rivals were all stuck behind Renault drivers. While Hamilton could not find a way past Kubica and seemed to accept the position behind him, Alonso put Petrow under pressure and made slight mistakes. However, at no time did Webber manage to benefit from one of these mistakes and drive past Alonso himself.

After Button was in the pits, Kubica had pulled out a big enough lead to stay ahead of Alonso after a stop. Alonso was three positions behind fourth place, which would have brought him the title win. Hamilton achieved the fastest lap after he had clear speed, but he couldn't catch up with Vettel.

After Timo Glock was eliminated several laps before the end of the race, Vettel was the first driver to cross the finish line and celebrated his fifth win of the season. Hamilton and Button followed in second and third place. After Rosberg had crossed the finish line in fourth position, Vettel was the world champion of the 2010 season. By winning the title, Vettel became the youngest Formula 1 world champion to date.

Behind the two Renault drivers Kubica and Petrow, Alonso finally crossed the finish line in seventh place ahead of Webber. For the Ferrari driver, it was only enough for the runner-up world championship. Webber was third in the drivers' championship ahead of Hamilton. The remaining points went to Alguersuari in ninth position, whom Massa, who crossed the finish line in tenth, could not overtake.

In the constructors' world championship McLaren-Mercedes secured the runner-up world championship ahead of Ferrari.
