The 2010 British Grand Prix took place on July 11th at the Silverstone Circuit in Silverstone and was the tenth race of the 2010 Formula 1 World Championship .

Reports

background

After the European Grand Prix , Lewis Hamilton led the drivers' standings with six points from Jenson Button and twelve points from Sebastian Vettel . McLaren-Mercedes led the constructors' championship with 30 points ahead of Red Bull-Renault and with 89 points ahead of Ferrari .

With Michael Schumacher (three times), Rubens Barrichello , Fernando Alonso , Hamilton and Vettel (once each), five former winners competed in this Grand Prix.

The course was rebuilt and took place in 2010 on the new "Arena" variant.

At HRT there was the first driver change of the season. Bruno Senna has been replaced by Sakon Yamamoto , who last competed in the 2007 Brazilian Grand Prix .

training

In the first free Friday practice session, Vettel achieved the fastest lap ahead of Hamilton and Robert Kubica . Paul di Resta took over the cockpit from Vitantonio Liuzzi for this training . In the second free practice session, Vettel's team-mate Webber achieved the fastest lap. Alonso and Vettel followed in second and third place. In the third free practice on Saturday, Vettel took the lead again. Webber was second ahead of Alonso.

Qualifying

In the first section of qualification, Vettel drove the fastest lap. The HRT, Virgin and Lotus pilots as well as Jaime Alguersuari were eliminated. In the second qualifying segment, Webber took over the lead from his teammate. The Force India pilots, Buemi , Petrow , Button, Hulkenberg and Kobayashi were eliminated. In the final section, Vettel finally secured pole position in front of his team-mates Webber and Alonso.

After qualifying, Liuzzi was moved back five places on the grid. The Italian had hindered Hulkenberg on his fast lap, even though he had been shown blue flags.

At Red Bull Racing there was another internal dispute after qualifying because Webber saw himself at a disadvantage compared to Vettel after he had to give his front wing to Vettel, whose copy had been damaged in practice. The team only brought two front wings of this specification.

run

Timo Glock on his starting place

At the start of the British Grand Prix, which was completely sold out with 120,000 spectators, the second-placed Red Bull Renault driver Webber prevailed against his team-mate Vettel, who started from pole position. Vettel drove through the first corner in second and was touched in the Copse by Hamilton, who was in third place. Vettel suffered a tire damage on the right rear wheel, which made itself felt in the Becketts , in which he was driving straight ahead. Webber led the field ahead of Hamilton, Kubica and Nico Rosberg . Alonso did not have a good start from third place and lost a few places. A position battle with his team-mate Felipe Massa caused a sensation , who also suffered a tire damage after touching Alonso. After the first lap, the Spaniard finished fifth.

Massa and Vettel had to go to the pits with their punctured tires to change and fell back to the end of the field, whereby Massa was able to pass the drivers of the new teams relatively quickly, while Vettel, who had to complete almost a full lap with a punctured tire, was already behind of over a minute. World champion Button, who had moved up from 14th to eighth position, had a particularly good start. At the front, Webber pulled away from Hamilton slightly and both drivers broke away from the rest of the field. The reason for this separation was the third-placed pilot Kubica, behind whom a long chain of pilots formed. Rosberg, who was directly behind him, was unable to overtake him.

Jenson Button finished fourth in his home Grand Prix

After Virgin driver Lucas di Grassi retired with hydraulic problems, Schumacher opened the pit stop phase. Since his direct competitor, Kobayashi, pitted a lap later, he did not benefit from this tactic. Schumacher's Mercedes team- mate Rosberg, who decided to make a later pit stop and thus passed Kubica, had more success.

Behind Rosberg there was a duel between Kubica and Alonso. After the Ferrari driver had attacked Kubica several times, he attacked Kubica at the exit of the Stowe and was in front of the Vale in front of him. However, the Renault driver defended his position and pushed Alonso onto the meadow. Alonso shortened the route and passed Kubica. After a few laps there was no report from the race control and Kubica had retired with a drive shaft damage, the race stewards, including Nigel Mansell at this Grand Prix, decided to impose a drive-through penalty for Alonso. After the race, there were different views of former Formula 1 racing drivers about the legality of the penalty. While David Coulthard and Marc Surer found the penalty unjustified, Nick Heidfeld was of the opinion that the stewards made the right decision.

Mark Webber won the British Grand Prix

Alonso lost many positions because of the penalty, as shortly after the penalty was imposed a safety car phase was necessary because Pedro de la Rosa had lost part of his rear wing and parts were lying on the road. De la Rosa then had to give up the race. Alonso was therefore only able to complete his penalty after the safety car phase and was then the last driver on the lead lap. The safety car phase was also inconvenient for Webber, as it meant that he lost his lead. His team-mate Vettel, on the other hand, benefited from the safety car phase because he was able to catch up with the drivers in front of him.

While Webber moved away from the front again after the safety car phase, Vettel made up a few positions in midfield and improved to seventh place after five overtaking maneuvers. His last duel against his compatriot Adrian Sutil lasted the longest . The Ferrari drivers both suffered tire damage in the final phase of the race in battles for positions and had to complete another pit stop. With the new tires, however, they managed to take the first two places in the table of the fastest race laps, led by Alonso.

After Alguersuari retired with a brake problem eight laps before the end, Webber secured his third win of the season ahead of Hamilton and Rosberg. After crossing the finish line, Webber radioed his team boss Christian Horner the comment “not bad for a number two driver” and alluded to the differences within the team in the run-up to the Grand Prix . A few days after the race, he apologized for what he said at the Grand Prix. Button, Barrichello, Kobayashi, who had achieved the best result for Sauber this season, Vettel, Sutil, Schumacher and Hülkenberg completed the points.

In the drivers' world championship, Hamilton kept the top position and increased the lead to the second-placed button. Webber took third place from his teammate Vettel. McLaren-Mercedes retained the top position in the constructors ahead of Red Bull-Renault and Ferrari.

With Mark Webber, another driver won this race track for the eighth time in a row.
