Reports
background
After the venue for the British Grand Prix had changed regularly between the Aintree Circuit and the Silverstone Circuit in previous years , the race took place for the first time on the Brands Hatch Circuit in 1964 . In the following decades the venue changed annually between Brands Hatch and Silverstone until 1986 . It was driven on the longer route variant, the route was considered to be a demanding driver and ran with a hilly route through a forest. Clark described the track as just as difficult as Monaco, with 20 gear changes to be made per lap and the suspension being stressed for an entire race.
After a serious accident in a Formula 2 race on the Circuit de Reims-Gueux , Peter Arundell was seriously injured and did not return to motorsport until 1966 . For this reason undertook Lotus with Mike Spence a new regular driver, for it was the first race of the season. Again, the new Lotus 33 was reported for his teammate Jim Clark , but only used in the training sessions. The car made its debut at the next Grand Prix, the Grand Prix of Germany .
Ferrari entered three different vehicles for the race. Lorenzo Bandini drove the Ferrari 156 Aero , the Ferrari 156 and the Ferrari 158 were available for John Surtees . BRP used two BRP Mk2s for Innes Ireland and Trevor Taylor . However, due to a training accident, Taylor had to resort to the Lotus 24 replacement car; it was the last time for the team that a customer vehicle was used in a race in the Automobile World Championship . BRM announced a third driver, Richard Attwood , alongside Graham Hill and Richie Ginther . This was his first entry into a World Automobile Championship race, but it was withdrawn and his debut did not take place until 1965 . Attwood was to drive an all-wheel drive BRM P67 that was designed in collaboration with Ferguson Research .
There were also changes in the teams with customer vehicles. Peter Revson left Reg Parnell Racing and drove as a privateer for the remainder of the season. Reg Parnell Racing Team drivers remained Chris Amon and Mike Hailwood . The Rob Walker Racing Team returned after a race break and drove with Joakim Bonnier . The Scuderia Centro Sud was with two BRM P57 for Tony Maggs and Giancarlo Baghetti reported again. John Taylor drove his only race of the season, which was also his debut in the automobile world championship. He drove a Cooper T73 with a Ford-Cosworth engine and was the first to use a Ford engine in a Cooper. Even Frank Gardner made his debut and played his only race of the season. His Brabham BT10 was the first Brabham with a Ford engine. Ian Raby also competed with a Brabham BT3 .
With Jack Brabham and Clark two former winners took part in the race, Ferrari had previously been successful seven times, Cooper and Lotus twice with the constructors . In the drivers' standings, Clark was one point ahead of Graham Hill and ten points ahead of Ginther. In the constructors' championship, Lotus was four points ahead of BRM and eleven points ahead of Brabham .
training
Trevor Taylor had a serious accident in the first training session . His foot was pinched under the brake pedal and without braking he lost control of the car, which flew over a hill serving as a route boundary and was badly damaged. Trevor Taylor was thrown out of the vehicle and injured his back, but he later took part in the race.
Clark secured pole position and was two tenths of a second faster than runner-up Graham Hill. For Clark it was the second pole position in a row and the third of the season. Graham Hill was followed by the two Brabham drivers Dan Gurney and Brabham, each one tenth of a second apart . Surtees was fifth ahead of McLaren. The best driver with customer car was Anderson in seventh place on the grid, the top ten were completed by Bandini, Bonnier and Innes Ireland .
Maurice Trintignant did not qualify for the race because his fastest lap was too slow. He was ten seconds slower than Maggs on the last grid position and was more than 16 seconds short of Clark's pole time. This was the only race in Trintignant's long career that he was unable to qualify for.
run
At the start Gurney tried to overtake Clark. Since Clark was on the inside of the curve, however, he kept the lead and built up a slight lead over Gurney on the first lap. Immediately after the start, Gardner had an accident, but was uninjured. Gurney set a new lap record on the track and was getting closer and closer to Clark; Problems with the ignition of his Brabham, however, caused a repair pit stop, which caused him to lose many places. Graham Hill moved up to second and also got closer to Clark. Behind them, Surtees overtook Brabham, improved the lap record one more time and narrowed the gap to Graham Hill. A few laps later, the gap between these two drivers widened again.
There were a few retirements in the back field. McLaren parked his Cooper on lap seven with a gearbox damage, the drivers from Reg Parnell Racing then followed with a defective clutch or damaged oil line. Taylor voluntarily gave up because he was physically unable to continue driving due to the pain in his back after his training accident. Raby had an accident later in the race, Maggs, Revson and Bonnier retired with technical problems. Brabham also pitted to have his mechanics investigate suspected suspension damage. He had previously spun off the track when attempting to overtake Surtees. The problem was not fixed at the pit stop, and when Brabham pitted again, he was sent back out onto the track without repair. After the race it turned out that a defective tank caused oil to drip onto the tires and impair the drivability of the vehicle. After the two stops, Brabham was seventh behind Anderson, Phil Hill and Bandini, whom he overtook one after the other as the race progressed.
At the top, Clark and Graham Hill had an intense duel that was decided by oil problems at Graham Hills BRM. Clark continuously expanded his lead in the last third of the race and improved the lap record several times. Only in the final laps of the race did he slow down, so that Graham Hill could again come within 2.8 seconds. Clark and Lotus won their third and final race of the season; for Clark it was the third consecutive win at the British Grand Prix. In addition to the victory, the pole position and driving the fastest race lap, Clark led the entire race and achieved a Grand Slam with it . With Graham Hill and John Surtees, two other British drivers made the podium in the home race. Brabham was fourth ahead of Bandini and Phil Hill. For Phil Hill it was the last point of his career in the automobile world championship. Anderson, Ginther, Spence and Ireland completed the top ten.
In the drivers' championship, Clark extended his lead over Graham Hill to four points, while Ginther in third place was already 19 points behind. In the constructors' championship, Lotus kept the lead ahead of BRM and Brabham.
