Reports
background
After the French Grand Prix , Michael Schumacher led the drivers' standings with 31 points ahead of David Coulthard and with 47 points ahead of Ralf Schumacher . Ferrari led the constructors' championship with 52 points ahead of McLaren-Mercedes and with 65 points ahead of Williams-BMW .
With Jacques Villeneuve , David Coulthard (twice each) and Michael Schumacher (once), three former winners competed for this Grand Prix.
training
The first free practice was divided into two parts with a common timekeeping. The first segment took place under dry conditions. Here the Ferrari initially had the better lap times. In the second segment of the training, however, the McLaren drivers undercut these times. Shortly before the end of the training session it started to rain, so that Mika Häkkinen had completed the fastest lap. He was followed by his team mate David Coulthard and Rubens Barrichello .
The two sections of the second free practice took place under wet conditions. Here drove Michael Schumacher set the fastest time ahead of Heinz-Harald Frentzen and Mika Hakkinen.
Qualifying
Qualifying again took place under dry weather conditions. Michael Schumacher set the fastest time here and secured his 40th pole position of his career. Just 82 thousandths of a second behind, Mika Häkkinen was second on the grid, followed by David Coulthard.
Tarso Marques failed on the 107 percent time and did not qualify for the race.
Warm up
In the warm-up, David Coulthard set the fastest time ahead of Jarno Trulli and Mika Häkkinen.
run
Mika Häkkinen won the race in front of Ferrari drivers Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello. The remaining points went to Juan Pablo Montoya and the two Sauber drivers Kimi Räikkönen and Nick Heidfeld, who thus consolidated Sauber's fourth position in the constructors' championship.
It was Häkkinen's first win of the season. Schumacher's closest pursuer Coulthard retired early in the race after a collision, so that Schumacher's lead in the world championship increased by six points.
Comments from the first three drivers
“It's a great feeling, I haven't been at the top of the podium for a long time.
I've always wanted to win at Silverstone because it's one of West McLaren Mercedes' home races. The car ran perfectly and the strategy was no less. "
“Unfortunately my car didn't drive the way I would have liked today. I had a few problems, especially when entering the Copse corner, where I slipped several times. The car wasn't well balanced and I couldn't get the most out of it. At the time, the only thing that counted for me was keeping the car on the track. When Mika drove next to me I had nothing to oppose him. As always, the strategy was a decision that the team made together. In my opinion, a different tactic would not necessarily have changed the race result. Unfortunately, we had little experience with the new tires because I had a set of tires cut open on Friday and then the changeable weather came upon us. So it wasn't easy to find the right strategy. We just weren't fast enough here today, but things might look different again at the next race. Whatever the situation in the World Championship now, I want to keep winning races. "
“I am satisfied with this result because this is my first time on the podium at Silverstone. I gained a few places at the start and making a fairly late pit stop was the best thing today. The car wasn't as balanced as I like it to be, to be honest it was totally different from the test drives here. So I drove very carefully, but I was still fast. Even with a lot of gasoline on board, I did well. When I left the Becketts my car was in good shape so I could keep the Williams behind me. After my pit stop in front of Montoya, I got back on the track and stayed in front of him, which was also due to the second set of tires, which was better. In the end I was even able to rest a little. To have got two podiums in two races, what more could you want? I am really happy."
