Reports
background
After the Malaysian Grand Prix , Michael Schumacher led the drivers' standings with 10 points ahead of Rubens Barrichello and David Coulthard with the same points . Ferrari led the constructors' championship with 19 points from McLaren-Mercedes and 25 points on Jordan-Honda .
With Michael Schumacher (three times), Mika Häkkinen (twice) and Jacques Villeneuve (once) three former winners competed for this Grand Prix.
training
In the first free practice session on Friday, David Coulthard was the fastest, more than a full second ahead of Jarno Trulli , followed by Michael Schumacher. Juan Pablo Montoya set the fastest time in free practice on Saturday . Häkkinen was second ahead of Coulthard.
Qualifying
In qualifying, Michael Schumacher managed to take pole position ahead of his brother Ralf . Third place went to Mika Häkkinen.
Warm up
In the warm-up, Michael Schumacher again set the fastest time, ahead of his team-mate Rubens Barrichello. Mika Häkkinen was third fastest.
run
In the lap into the starting grid, Rubens Barrichello slipped off the lane and landed on the gravel. Then he started in the replacement vehicle. Before the start of the warm-up lap, the mechanics of Eddie Irvine's Jaguar were on the vehicle 15 seconds before the lights switched. This was punished with a 10-second stop-and-go penalty, which he took on in the 5th lap.
At the start, Michael Schumacher decided the duel for himself and stayed first. Ralf Schumacher started badly and immediately lost four places. Second after the first three corners was Juan Pablo Montoya, followed by David Coulthard and Jarno Trulli. The loser from the start was Mika Häkkinen, who did not even start due to transmission problems. As you couldn't get your car off the start / finish straight fast enough, the decision was made to send the safety car out.
The restart then took place in the second lap. The rookie Montoya used his experience from the CART series and passed Schumacher with a tough maneuver. When braking on Turn 4, Rubens Barrichello drove Ralf Schumacher into the rear. For Barrichello, the race ended prematurely. Ralf Schumacher escaped into the pit lane, which he left four laps behind and continued the race.
At the head of the field, Montoya led for laps ahead of Schumacher and Coulthard. In midfield, Olivier Panis made up several places, but that was due to the fact that he was low on fuel. In the meantime, raindrops could be seen from time to time, but due to the heat they had no effect. Meanwhile, Michael Schumacher put pressure on Montoya on every lap, but Montoya could not be overtaken because of its superior top speed. On lap 15 Enrique Bernoldi in the Arrows finished his race in the pit lane with a gearbox failure. Even Fernando Alonso had to park his vehicle, the reason for his departure were electronics problems.
On lap 25, Michael Schumacher pitted early. The amount of fuel that was refueled was not enough for him to have been able to drive through, so it was clear that he was on a two-stop strategy. The next pilot who couldn't go any further was Luciano Burti . On lap 30 he had to park his Jaguar due to an engine failure. So far, David Coulthard drove an inconspicuous race in second place, but kept up with Montoya's times by a small margin. Behind Coulthard was Michael Schumacher, who had already been at the pits, around 30 seconds behind. Jarno Trulli, Heinz-Harald Frentzen and Nick Heidfeld followed.
On lap 38 Montoya ran into two vehicles that he had to lap. Jos Verstappen , who had just let Montoya pass, braked later in Turn 4 and drove into his car. That ended the race for both pilots. The new leader was thus David Coulthard. He then came straight to his pit stop on the same lap because his tires were worn out. The lead of about 30 seconds on Schumacher was enough to stay ahead of him. The gap was now less than a second, but it was clear that Schumacher had to come back into the pits. Meanwhile, there were signs that it might rain, so the disadvantage of Schumacher would be eliminated. Shortly after most of the drivers had completed their scheduled pit stop, the time had come and the rain started. So everyone had to go back to the pits to pick up rain tires. The whole field decided in favor of the intermediates.
Schumacher came to the tire change a lap earlier than Coulthard, who lost the lead and was now a few seconds behind Schumacher. Its lead did not last long, however, because it turned after Turn 4, so that Coulthard caught up again. Two laps later, the two leaders ran into slower vehicles. At the end of the start / finish straight, both pilots were tied and Schumacher on the outside and Coulthard on the inside to lap Tarso Marques , so that Coulthard got past Schumacher. The rain then got more intense and it turned out that Schumacher couldn't cope with the conditions so well. Coulthard thus expanded his leadership.
Between lap 52 and 56, Eddie Irvine, Kimi Räikkönen and Ralf Schumacher spun and none of them drove any further. With seven laps to go, Heinz-Harald Frentzen also retired with electronic problems. Nick Heidfeld took third place. In the fifth-last lap overtook Olivier Panis nor Jarno Trulli .
Finally David Coulthard crossed the finish line ahead of Michael Schumacher. Nick Heidfeld followed, who achieved his first podium, followed by Olivier Panis and Jarno Trulli. Overall, only 10 out of 22 pilots made it to the finish.
In the world championship, David Coulthard caught up four points on Michael Schumacher, who with 26 points in three races was still 6 points ahead. McLaren also caught up four points on Ferrari in the constructors' championship.
