The situation in the drivers' world championship was similar to that of the previous year . Again came McLaren -Werkspilot Lewis Hamilton as the World Cup leading to São Paulo. In 2007, the Briton lost the title in the last race to Ferrari driver Kimi Räikkönen , who won the race, while Hamilton was only seventh. In 2008 Hamilton (94 points) came to Brazil with a lead of seven points over Felipe Massa (87 points). If the Ferrari driver won, Hamilton had to finish at least fifth to win the title.
Felipe Massa secured the sixth pole position of the season in qualifying with a time of 1: 12.368 minutes . It was his third straight pole in Brazil. The second fastest time in qualifying was Jarno Trulli , which for him was the best starting position of the season. Kimi Raikkonen was third fastest. World Championship leader Lewis Hamilton secured starting position four.
The race
The race was won by Felipe Massa, who believed himself to be the new world champion for 30 seconds. A few laps before the end, heavy rain set in, forcing almost all drivers into the pits. Lewis Hamilton, who had to finish fifth to become world champion, was overtaken by Sebastian Vettel on the penultimate lap and pushed to sixth place. With two corners to go - Massa had already crossed the finish line and the Ferrari mechanics celebrated the supposed world title - Hamilton overtook Toyota driver Timo Glock , who was driving in the rain with dry tires, and secured fifth place. Massa finished second in the drivers 'championship and Scuderia won the constructors' cup. For Massa it was the last victory in his Formula 1 career.
