report
backgrounds
After the Mexican Grand Prix , Lewis Hamilton led the drivers' standings unassailable with 56 points ahead of Sebastian Vettel and 71 points ahead of Valtteri Bottas . In the constructors' championship, Mercedes also led unassailable with 140 points ahead of Ferrari and with 255 points ahead of Red Bull Racing .
At the Brazilian Grand Prix, Pirelli provided the drivers with the tire compounds P Zero Medium (white), P Zero Soft (yellow), P Zero Supersoft (red), as well as Cinturato Intermediates (green) and Cinturato Full Wets (blue) for wet conditions .
Compared to the previous year, several changes were made to the route. In Senna-S , Ferradura , turn eight and Bico do Pato , additional tire stacks were built due to the higher speeds of the vehicles. In Senna-S , in Descida do Lago , in turn eight and in Bico do Pato , additional, higher curbs were installed to prevent drivers from leaving the track. In addition, grooves were cut in the asphalt in several places so that rainwater could drain away better.
The two DRS zones remained unchanged compared to the previous year. The first zone began 20 meters after the Senna-S , the measuring point was at the apex of curve two , the right -hand bend of the Senna-S . The measuring point for the second DRS zone, which was on the start-finish straight , was 30 meters after the Junção , and the DRS could then be activated 60 meters after turn 15 , the last bend before the start-finish line.
Kevin Magnussen (six), Stoffel Vandoorne (five), Romain Grosjean , Nico Hülkenberg (four each), Kimi Räikkönen , Max Verstappen , Vettel (three each), Marcus Ericsson , Hamilton, Felipe Massa , Carlos Sainz jr. , Pascal Wehrlein (two each) and Lance Stroll (one) went into the race weekend with penalty points.
With Massa, Vettel (twice each), Raikkonen and Hamilton (once each) four former winners competed in this race.
Race stewards were Silvia Bellot (ESP), Felipe Giaffone (BRA), Paul Gutjahr (CHE) and Derek Warwick (GBR).
free training
In the first free practice, Hamilton was fastest with a lap time of 1: 09.202 minutes ahead of Bottas and Raikkonen. Brendon Hartley did not drive a timed lap due to an engine failure, his team mate Pierre Gasly also only drove five laps due to an engine failure.
In the second free practice session, Hamilton again set the fastest time, this time in 1: 09.515 minutes ahead of Bottas and Daniel Ricciardo .
In the third free practice, Bottas set the fastest time in 1: 09.281 minutes ahead of Hamilton and Raikkonen. During the training, a virtual safety car phase was called after Stroll parked his vehicle at the edge of the track with a gearbox defect.
Qualifying
The qualifying consisted of three parts with a net running time of 45 minutes. In the first qualifying segment (Q1), the drivers had 18 minutes to qualify for the race. All drivers who achieved a time in the first section that was a maximum of 107 percent of the fastest lap time qualified for the Grand Prix. The best 15 drivers reached the next part. The segment was interrupted after about two minutes due to an accident by Hamilton. Raikkonen was fastest. Räikkönen and Vettel used the soft mix, all other drivers drove super soft . Hamilton could no longer participate in qualifying after his accident and therefore did not qualify for the Grand Prix. Next to him, the Sauber drivers, Stroll and Gasly were eliminated.
The second section (Q2) lasted 15 minutes. The ten fastest pilots qualified for the third part of qualifying. Vettel was fastest. Hartley did not drive a timed lap because of the penalty issued against him and thus had no time. Beside him both Haas drivers, Vandoorne and Ocon retired.
The last section (Q3) lasted twelve minutes, in which the first ten starting positions were assigned. With a lap time of 1: 08.322 minutes, Bottas set the fastest time ahead of Vettel and Raikkonen. It was the third pole position for Bottas in the Formula 1 World Championship.
Gasly, Hartley and Ricciardo were moved back ten starting positions this season due to the use of the eighth MGU-H . After the first free practice session, Gasly changed other drive unit components. Due to the use of the ninth MGU-H and the seventh turbocharger , he was moved 15 places back this season, the penalty increased to 25 starting places. Stroll was moved five starting positions back due to a premature gear change. Ericsson was also moved five places down due to a premature gearbox change. Since the MGU-H, turbocharger, combustion engine and transmission were changed at Hamilton after qualifying, Hamilton had to start from the pit lane.
run
Vettel won the race ahead of Bottas and Räikkönen. It was Vettel's 47th victory in the Formula 1 World Championship, the fifth of which this season. Bottas achieved the twelfth and Raikkonen the seventh podium finish of the season. The remaining points were placed by Hamilton, Verstappen, Ricciardo, Massa, Alonso, Pérez and Hülkenberg.
The top three positions in the drivers 'and constructors' championships remained unchanged.
