The Toro Rosso STr12 is the Formula 1 - racing cars of the Scuderia Toro Rosso for the Formula 1 World Championship 2017 . It is the team’s twelfth Formula 1 car. It was presented to the public on February 26, 2017 as the last vehicle from the 2017 Formula 1 World Championship.
Technology and development
Like all Formula 1 vehicles of 2017, the STR12 is a rear-wheel drive monoposto with a monocoque made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) . In addition to the monocoque, many other parts of the vehicle, including the body parts and the steering wheel, are made of CFRP. The brake discs are also made from a composite material reinforced with carbon fibers.
The STR12 is the successor to the Toro Rosso STR11 . Since the technical regulations changed significantly for the 2017 season, most of the vehicle has been redeveloped. In order to have resources available for this, the further development of the previous model was stopped early.
With a total width of 2000 mm and a width between the front and rear axles of 1600 mm, the vehicle is 200 mm wider than the previous model. The height is unchanged at 950 mm. Completely new are the front wing , which is now 1800 mm wide instead of 1650 mm, and the rear wing , whose width changes from 750 mm to 950 mm and whose height changes from 950 mm to 800 mm, as well as the diffuser , which now has a total height of 175 mm instead of 125 mm and a width of 1050 mm increased by 50 mm. To improve the air flow to the rear wing, the car has a noticeable fin on the engine cover.
Is driven from the STr12 Renault RE17 , an in vehicle center -mounted 1.6 liter V-6 engine of Renault with a turbocharger and a 120 kW strong electric motor , so it is a hybrid electric vehicle . The Red Bull Racing car's sequential gearbox has eight gears. The gear change is triggered by paddles on the steering wheel. The vehicle has only two pedals, an accelerator pedal (right) and a brake pedal (left). Just like many other functions, the clutch , which is only used when starting from a standstill, is operated via a lever on the steering wheel.
Unlike the previous model, the STR12 is equipped with 305 mm wide front tires and 405 mm wide rear tires from the standard supplier Pirelli , which are mounted on 13-inch wheels. This means that the tires on the front axle and 80 mm on the rear axle are 60 mm wider than in the previous season. This also required the development of new wheel suspensions for the STR12.
Like all Formula 1 vehicles since 2011 , the STR12 has a Drag Reduction System (DRS), which reduces the drag of the vehicle on the straights by flattening part of the rear wing if it is allowed to be used. The DRS is also activated with a switch on the steering wheel of the car.
Painting and sponsorship
The STR12 is predominantly painted in blue, with a red stripe on the side of the vehicle and red side panels on the front and rear wings. The main sponsor Red Bull's logo is affixed to the engine cover in silver, and the Red Bull lettering on the front and rear wings and the side pods is also silver.
Acronis , Casio (with the Edifice brand), Estrella Galicia , Lidl and Pirelli also advertise on the vehicle.
driver
Toro Rosso also started the 2017 season with drivers Daniil Kwjat and Carlos Sainz junior . Kwjat was replaced by Pierre Gasly after the Malaysian Grand Prix , then returned to the cockpit for a race at the US Grand Prix as Sainz switched to Renault . Since Gasly could not contest this race due to a scheduling collision, Brendon Hartley competed for the team. At the Mexican Grand Prix Gasly returned to Toro Rosso, Kwjat lost his cockpit again, this time to Hartley.
