The McLaren MCL32 is the Formula 1 - racing cars from McLaren for the Formula 1 World Championship 2017 . It is the 45th McLaren Formula 1 car. It was presented in Woking on February 24, 2017 .

The vehicle is the first McLaren racing car since 1980 that was not named MP4 in reference to the merger with Ron Dennis ' British Formula 2 racing team , Project Four Racing (the M initially stood for Marlboro , later for McLaren ) in its name.

Technology and development

Like all Formula 1 vehicles of 2017, the MCL32 is a rear-wheel drive monoposto with a monocoque made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) . In addition to the monocoque, many other parts of the vehicle, including body parts and the steering wheel, are made of CFRP.

The MCL32 is the successor to the MP4-31 . As the technical regulations changed significantly for the 2017 season, most of the vehicle has been redeveloped. In order to have resources available for this, the further development of the previous model was stopped early.

With a total width of 2000 mm and a width between the front and rear axles of 1600 mm, the vehicle is 200 mm wider than the previous model. The height is unchanged at 950 mm. Completely new are the front wing , which is now 1800 mm wide instead of 1650 mm, the rear wing , the width of which changes from 750 mm to 950 mm and the height of which changes from 950 mm to 800 mm, and the diffuser , which now has a total height of 175 mm instead of 125 mm and a width of 1050 mm increased by 50 mm.

Is driven from the MCL32 Honda RA617H that in center of the vehicle is mounted, a 1.6-liter V-6 engine of Honda with a turbocharger and a 120  kW strong electric motor , so it is a hybrid electric vehicle . The car's sequential gearbox has eight gears. The gear change is triggered by paddles on the steering wheel. The vehicle has only two pedals, an accelerator pedal (right) and a brake pedal (left). Just like many other functions, the clutch , which is only used when starting from a standstill, is operated via a lever on the steering wheel.

Unlike the previous model, the MCL32 is equipped with 305 mm wide front tires and 405 mm wide rear tires from the standard supplier Pirelli , which are mounted on 13-inch wheels. This means that the tires on the front axle and 80 mm on the rear axle are 60 mm wider than in the previous season. This also required the development of new wheel suspensions for the MCL32. The brake discs are made of silicon carbide ceramic reinforced with carbon fibers .

Like all Formula 1 vehicles since 2011 , the MCL32 has a Drag Reduction System (DRS), which reduces the drag of the vehicle on the straights by flattening part of the rear wing if it is allowed to be used. The DRS is also activated with a switch on the steering wheel of the car.

Painting and sponsorship

The MCL32 is mainly painted in orange and black.

Chandon , CNN , engine supplier Honda, Johnnie Walker , NTT Communications , Pirelli, watch manufacturer Richard Mille and SAP advertise on the vehicle.

driver

McLaren competed in the 2017 season with drivers Fernando Alonso and Stoffel Vandoorne . Vandoorne contested his first full Formula 1 season and replaced Jenson Button , who remained with the team as test and reserve driver. Button replaced Alonso at the Monaco Grand Prix , while Alonso started at the Indianapolis 500 .
