report

backgrounds

After the US Grand Prix , Lewis Hamilton led the drivers' standings with 66 points ahead of Sebastian Vettel and 87 points ahead of Valtteri Bottas . In the constructors' championship, Mercedes was clearly ahead of Ferrari with 147 points and Red Bull Racing with 260 points .

At the Mexican Grand Prix, Pirelli provided the drivers with the tire compounds P Zero Soft (yellow), P Zero Supersoft (red), P Zero Ultrasoft (purple), as well as Cinturato Intermediates (green) and Cinturato Full Wets (blue) for wet conditions .

Compared to the previous year, there were several minor changes to the route, which mainly served to increase safety. Additional TecPro barriers were erected in turns one , curve seven , curve ten , curve twelve and curve 16 . On the outside of turn one , new, 50 mm high curb stones were installed, and the grass strip on the edge of the road between turn two and turn three was paved. At these points, a further 50 mm high curb was added one meter next to the line boundary. In turn four , the boundary was set back by 20 meters in order to create a larger run-off zone . Additional curb stones were installed at the apexes of turn eight and turn eleven to prevent drivers from leaving the track.

There were two DRS zones that remained unchanged compared to the previous year. The first zone was on the start-finish straight and began exactly 425 meters behind the last corner. The second DRS zone began 120 meters after turn three . There was only one measuring point for both DRS zones, where the distance to the vehicle in front was determined; it was at the exit of turn 15 . In the event of a successful overtaking maneuver on the start-finish straight, the driver in front was allowed to use the DRS again in the second zone.

There was a driver change before this Grand Prix. Pierre Gasly , who skipped the US Grand Prix due to a scheduling conflict with the Super Formula , returned to Toro Rosso , replacing Daniil Kwjat .

Kevin Magnussen (six), Stoffel Vandoorne , Vettel (five each), Nico Hülkenberg , Max Verstappen (four each), Romain Grosjean , Kimi Räikkönen , Carlos Sainz jr. (three each), Marcus Ericsson , Hamilton, Felipe Massa , Pascal Wehrlein (two each) and Lance Stroll (one) went into the race weekend with penalty points.

With Hamilton (once) a former winner competed in this race.

The race commissioners were Hans-Gerd Ennser (DEU), Felipe Giaffone (BRA), Tom Kristensen (DEN) and Jorge Rodríguez (MEX).

free training

In the first free practice, Bottas set the fastest time in 1: 17.824 minutes ahead of Hamilton and Verstappen. At the beginning of the training there were a lot of brakes . Almost all drivers got off the track at least once, and various pilots complained about the slippery track. After an accident by Alfonso Celis jr. There was also a virtual safety car phase after Brendon Hartley had to park his vehicle at the edge of the track. Vandoorne only drove three installation laps due to a technical problem on his vehicle.

In the second free practice, Daniel Ricciardo was fastest in 1: 17.801 minutes ahead of Hamilton and Verstappen. Training had to be interrupted after just a few minutes after Grosjean suffered a tire damage to the right rear, spun and then lost parts of his front wing on the start-finish straight. Because his underbody was damaged in the process, his training was over.

In the third free practice session, Verstappen set the fastest time in 1: 17.113 minutes ahead of Hamilton and Vettel.

Qualifying

The qualifying consisted of three parts with a net running time of 45 minutes. In the first qualifying segment (Q1), the drivers had 18 minutes to qualify for the race. All drivers who achieved a time in the first section that was a maximum of 107 percent of the fastest lap time qualified for the Grand Prix. The best 15 drivers reached the next part. Hamilton was fastest. Raikkonen, Ricciardo, Vettel and Verstappen used the Supersoft mixture, all other drivers drove Ultrasoft . Gasly did not take part in qualifying because of an engine change and therefore did not qualify for the Grand Prix. Next to him, the Haas and Sauber drivers retired.

The second section (Q2) lasted 15 minutes. The ten fastest pilots qualified for the third part of qualifying. Verstappen was fastest. Alonso and Vandoorne did not drive in this segment because of the relocations pronounced against them. Hartley parked his vehicle on the side of the track with a defective turbocharger and did not drive a timed lap. In addition to these three drivers, both Williams drivers retired.

The last section (Q3) lasted twelve minutes, in which the first ten starting positions were assigned. With a lap time of 1: 16.488 minutes, Vettel set the best time ahead of Verstappen and Hamilton. It was the 50th pole position for Vettel in the Formula 1 World Championship.

Alonso was moved back 20 starting positions this season due to the use of the eleventh copy of the MGU-H and turbocharger and the ninth copy of the combustion engine. Vandoorne was moved 35 starting places down this season due to the use of the twelfth copy of the MGU-H and turbocharger, the tenth copy of the combustion engine, the ninth copy of the MGU-K and the seventh copy of the energy storage and control electronics. Gasly was moved back 20 starting places this season because of the use of the seventh MGU-H, the sixth turbocharger and the fifth control electronics. Shortly before the race, there were two further penalty transfers. Hartley has been relegated to 20 starting positions this season due to the use of the seventh MGU-H, the seventh internal combustion engine and the sixth turbocharger. Ricciardo was also moved back 20 starting positions this season because of the use of the seventh MGU-H, the sixth combustion engine and the sixth turbocharger.

run

Verstappen passed Vettel before the first corner, and the vehicles came into slight contact. Hamilton tried to take advantage of this and overtook Vettel. At the exit of turn three , Vettel touched Hamilton's right rear tire with his already damaged front wing. Vettel lost other parts of his wing and Hamilton suffered a tire damage, and the diffuser on his Mercedes was damaged. Hamilton had to pits slowly and fell back to the bottom of the field. Vettel only had to let Bottas pass, but at the end of the lap he also drove into the pits and, like Hamilton, switched to soft , he also had the defective front wing replaced. At the end of the first lap, Verstappen was leading ahead of Bottas, Ocon, Hülkenberg, Sainz, Pérez, Massa, Raikkonen, Stroll and Ricciardo.

On the second lap, Sainz spun and fell back to 18th place, at the end of the lap he also switched to soft and came back on the track a few seconds before Hamilton. Ricciardo overtook Stroll on the third lap and was already in seventh place, as Massa also switched to soft due to a loss of air on one of his tires . Ricciardo then parked his vehicle in the pits at the end of the fifth lap with a technical defect.

In the following laps, Vettel overtook several competitors in the back of the field, while Hamilton could not get past Sainz and continued to drive more than a lap behind in last place. Grosjean received a five-second time penalty for leaving the track in a duel with Alonso and thus gaining an advantage. In addition, he received one penalty point.

In the 18th lap, Pérez switched to soft , and Hülkenberg and Ocon did the same one lap later. Ocon came back on the track ahead of Magnussen, Hülkenberg and Pérez behind Magnussen.

On the 26th lap, Hülkenberg parked his vehicle on the edge of the track. Ericsson, who was in eighth place, came to the pits to change tires and fell back to 15th place. Shortly afterwards, Pérez overtook Magnussen, who had not yet pitted. In addition, Vettel passed Alonso and was now in eighth place.

On the 32nd lap, Hartley had to park his Toro Rosso with a fire in the area of the rear end at the edge of the track, the race management announced a virtual safety car phase . Magnussen and Vandoorne used these for their only tire changes, one lap later Verstappen, Bottas, Raikkonen, Stroll, Vettel, Alonso and Hamilton also changed tires. Vettel pursued an aggressive strategy with the renewed switch to Ultrasoft , all other pilots switched to Supersoft , Raikkonen even to Soft .

The race was released again on lap 34. Vettel drove the fastest lap times in the field and thus shortened the gap to Pérez by up to two seconds per lap. After he had passed Pérez on lap 50, he switched back to Ultrasoft . However, he had so much lead over the Magnussen behind him that he stayed in seventh place. Vettel shortened the gap to the pilots in front of him and overtook Stroll and Ocon in the next laps, both of whom were significantly slower and did not offer any resistance. Vettel's deficit on Raikkonen was more than 20 seconds.

Ericsson gave up the race after a fire on his vehicle in the pits. Hamilton had meanwhile passed several competitors and was now in tenth place. Sainz gave up the race with a defective steering in the pits. In the following laps, Hamilton ran into Magnussen and Alonso, who fought with each other. In the 68th lap, Hamilton then passed Alonso.

Verstappen won the race ahead of Bottas and Raikkonen. It was Verstappen's third win in the Formula 1 World Championship, the second of which this season. For Bottas it was the tenth and for Raikkonen the sixth podium finish of the season. The remaining points were placed by Vettel, Ocon, Stroll, Pérez, Magnussen, Hamilton and Alonso.

Ninth place was enough for Hamilton to win his fourth drivers' world championship, Bottas shortened the gap to second-placed Vettel. In the constructors' championship, the first four places were now firmly assigned to Mercedes, Ferrari, Red Bull and Force India.
