backgrounds

After the Canadian Grand Prix , Sebastian Vettel led the drivers' standings with twelve points ahead of Lewis Hamilton and 48 points ahead of Valtteri Bottas . In the constructors' championship, Mercedes led Ferrari with eight points and Red Bull Racing with 110 points .

At the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, Pirelli provided the drivers with the tire compounds P Zero Medium (white), P Zero Soft (yellow) and P Zero Supersoft (red), as well as Cinturato Intermediates (green) and Cinturato Full Wets (blue) for wet conditions .

Compared to the previous year, there were various changes to the route, which were mainly made for safety reasons. The run-off zones in curve one , curve two , curve three , curve five , curve eight and curve 15 were enlarged by moving the road boundaries to the rear. In addition, an additional row of TecPro barriers was erected in curve one , curve three , curve five , curve seven , curve eight and curve 15 . At the corner exit of corner one , as well as on the inside of corner three and curve five , the curbs were replaced by painted strips on the asphalt, and the dividing strip that previously consisted of curbs between the pit exit and the track was now only painted. In front of turn seven and in turn 18 , new openings were built in the route boundary so that vehicles could be recovered more quickly. The SAFER barriers on the outside of turn 13 and turn 19 have each been lengthened by 34 meters.

There were two DRS zones on the route , which were changed compared to the previous year. The first zone was on the start-finish straight and began 54 meters after curve 20 , the measuring point was at the apex of the curve. The second zone began 347 meters after turn two , here the measuring point was on the safety car line at the level of the start of the pit entrance. In the previous year there was only one measuring point for both zones.

Honda provided the McLaren team with a revised MGU-H for free practice for the first time on this race weekend . Since both drivers had already used five MGU-Hs this season, they received a starting place penalty.

Before the race, Sauber parted ways with his team boss Monisha Kaltenborn , this position was temporarily taken over by Beat Zehnder and Jörg Zander during the race .

Jolyon Palmer (seven), Vettel (six), Daniil Kwjat , Kevin Magnussen , Sergio Pérez , Carlos Sainz jr. (five each), Nico Hülkenberg , Esteban Ocon (four each), Romain Grosjean , Stoffel Vandoorne (three each), Hamilton, Felipe Massa , Pascal Wehrlein (two each) and Max Verstappen (one) went into the race weekend with penalty points.

The Azerbaijan Grand Prix was held for the first time. Last year, a race called the European Grand Prix took place on the same track.

The race stewards were Paul Gutjahr (CHE), Anar Schukurow (AZE), Vincenzo Spano (VEN) and Danny Sullivan (USA).

free training

In the first free practice, Verstappen was fastest with a lap time of 1: 44.410 minutes ahead of Daniel Ricciardo and Vettel. The training had to be interrupted by Pérez after an accident.

In the second free practice session, Verstappen again set the fastest time, this time in 1: 43.362 minutes ahead of Bottas and Ricciardo. This training also had to be interrupted after an accident, this time Palmer caused the interruption.

Since the two accidents that caused the training interruptions happened in turn eight , the drivers suggested that the race management revise the curbs in this corner. When driving over this curb, some of the vehicles took off and landed unpredictably, so that several drivers lost control. The curb was therefore flattened at this point before the third free practice session.

In the third free practice session, Bottas was fastest in 1: 42.742 minutes ahead of Raikkonen and Hamilton. Palmer parked his Renault about an hour before the end of the training with a fire in the drive area at the edge of the track, the team then had to change the drive unit.

Qualifying

The qualifying consisted of three parts with a net running time of 45 minutes. In the first qualifying segment (Q1), the drivers had 18 minutes to qualify for the race. All drivers who achieved a time in the first section that was a maximum of 107 percent of the fastest lap time qualified for the Grand Prix. The best 15 drivers reached the next part. Bottas was the fastest. After the fire in his car in free practice, Palmer was unable to participate in qualifying and therefore did not qualify for the race. The McLaren drivers, Ericsson and Grosjean were eliminated.

The second section (Q2) lasted 15 minutes. The ten fastest pilots qualified for the third part of qualifying. Hamilton was fastest. Wehrlein, Hülkenberg, Magnussen and the Toro Rosso pilots were eliminated.

The final section (Q3) lasted twelve minutes, during which the first ten starting positions were awarded. The segment was interrupted about three and a half minutes before the end after an accident by Ricciardo due to a driving error. Hamilton set the best time with a lap time of 1: 40.593 minutes, ahead of Bottas and Raikkonen. It was the 66th pole position for Hamilton in the Formula 1 World Championship, so he passed Ayrton Senna and had now achieved the second-most pole position in the Formula 1 World Championship alone behind Michael Schumacher .

Alonso has been moved a total of 40 positions back this season because of the use of the sixth and seventh MGU-H, the sixth and seventh turbocharger, the fifth internal combustion engine and the fifth MGU-K . Vandoorne was moved a total of 35 positions back because of the use of the sixth and seventh MGU-H and the sixth and seventh turbocharger this season and an early gear change. Sainz was relocated three places on the grid for causing a collision with Grosjean in the Canadian Grand Prix. Palmer was allowed to start because he had been fast enough in free practice.

run

At the start, the positions at the top remained unchanged. After settling at the approach to the first curve braked had went Kwjat corner exit back directly in front of his teammates Sainz on the route. Sainz tried to avoid a collision and spun, falling back to the end of the field. In turn two Raikkonen attacked Botta on the outside. Bottas left Raikkonen space and drove over the curb on the inside of the curve, his car understeer and the vehicles came into contact. Raikkonen lost control of his Ferrari and hit the track barrier, he lost three positions, but continued the race. Bottas suffered a puncture, fell back to the end of the field and switched to soft at the end of the first lap , and the front wing on his Mercedes was changed. Since he had to finish the lap at slow speed and the repair stop lasted significantly longer than a normal pit stop, he resumed the race one lap behind in last place.

Hamilton led before Vettel, Pérez, Verstappen, Räikkönen, Massa, Ocon, Lance Stroll , Ricciardo and Hülkenberg.

At the end of the fifth lap, Ricciardo pitted because a piece of debris from the accident between Bottas and Raikkonen was blocking his brake cooling. He also switched to soft and fell back to 17th place. On the seventh lap, Palmer, who had been complaining about a misfire of his engine since the warm-up lap, gave up the race in the pits.

On the ninth lap, Kvjat parked his vehicle on the track with an electrical failure. One lap later, Verstappen reported engine problems by radio, and with the help of his racing engineer, he made various adjustments to the steering wheel, but these did not improve the situation. He pitted and gave up the race. In retrospect, it turned out that a piece of debris from the collision had blocked the supply of cooling air on the first lap and the oil and water temperature had risen significantly as a result. Meanwhile, the race management sent the safety car out onto the track to rescue Kvjat's vehicle .

Almost all drivers used the safety car phase to change tires and switched to Soft , Ricciardo and Bottas switched back to Supersoft .

Hamilton led before Vettel, Pérez, Räikkönen, Massa, Ocon, Stroll, Hülkenberg, Magnussen and Ricciardo. Hulkenberg was the only driver in the top ten who had not yet changed the tires.

At the end of the 16th lap the race was released, shortly before Bottas was allowed to lap back. Hamilton had left relatively little distance from the safety car, so that he had almost caught up with it before entering the pit. Toto Wolff spoke from less than 150 meters after the race. Pérez attacked Vettel at the end of the start-finish straight, but he defended himself. Behind them Massa and Ocon overtook Raikkonen, who shortly afterwards lost an air baffle. Ricciardo overtook Magnussen and was now in ninth place. As there were other debris lying on the track in addition to the parts that Raikkonen's Ferrari had lost, the safety car was sent out again. Since some parts were on the start-finish straight, the field was led through the pit lane.

In the 19th lap, the safety car switched off the flashing lights, thus announcing the renewed release at the end of the lap. Hamilton, who no longer had to drive within ten car lengths behind the safety car, did not accelerate out of turn 15 to leave more distance to the safety car. Vettel was surprised and drove on Hamilton. Then he drove next to Hamilton, complained with hand signals and steered his Ferrari against Hamilton's Mercedes. He complained by radio that Hamilton had carried out a "brake test" with him, Hamilton in turn complained by radio that Vettel had intentionally caused a collision. An analysis of the telemetry data showed that, contrary to Vettel's statement, Hamilton had not slowed down. The race stewards investigated the incident, but initially no penalty was issued.

At the restart, Massa overtook Pérez, and in turn two , Ocon also tried to overtake Pérez. The vehicles came into contact, Ocon suffered a tire damage at the rear right, Pérez then touched the barrier and lost his front wing, and his tie rod broke. Raikkonen ran over part of the front wing and also suffered a tire damage to the rear right. The safety car came out again. Raikkonen drove back to the pit lane so quickly that parts of the tread of the disintegrating tire caused serious damage to the area of the rear wing and the engine cover. At the pits, Raikkonen and Pérez got out of their vehicles.

Hamilton led ahead of Vettel, Massa, Stroll, Ricciardo, Hülkenberg, Magnussen, Alonso, Sainz and Grosjean. Since countless debris was lying on the track again, the race management decided to interrupt the race with the red flag . In the meantime, the vehicles were repaired by Pérez and Räikkönen, so that both participated in the restart. Repairs were also made on the other vehicles, including Vettel's front wing and Hamilton's diffuser .

The race was reopened after one lap behind the safety car. Ricciardo overtook Hülkenberg, Stroll and Massa at the end of the start-finish straight, who shortly thereafter lost further positions to Stroll, Hülkenberg, Magnussen and Alonso. He gave up the race one lap later with a defective shock absorber . After a driving mistake, Hülkenberg touched the barrier, suffered a break in the suspension and retired.

Hamilton led before Vettel, Ricciardo, Stroll, Magnussen, Alonso, Sainz, Ocon, Bottas and Grosjean. Ocon and Bottas overtook Sainz on laps 30 and 31 respectively.

In Hamilton's Mercedes, the headrest attachment came loose, he first tried to hold the headrest on the straight with his hand. The race management decided, however, that this was too dangerous and that Hamilton had to have it repaired in the pits. He pitted on lap 31 and fell back to ninth place, one lap later he overtook Sainz.

Vettel was given a ten-second stop-and-go penalty for “dangerous driving” during the safety car phase, and he also received three penalty points. He took the penalty on lap 34 and dropped to seventh place, just ahead of Hamilton. Räikkönen and Pérez received drive-through penalties because work was carried out on the vehicles in the pits during the break in the race. Ocon and Bottas overtook Alonso in quick succession on lap 35, one lap later Vettel and then Hamilton also passed Alonso.

Grosjean pitted on lap 36 with braking problems, he resumed the race after a short repair. Ocon and Bottas caught up with Magnussen and overtook him on lap 37, followed two laps later by Vettel and Hamilton.

Another lap later, Bottas overtook Ocon and was now in third place, twelve seconds behind Stroll. Pérez left the race with a broken seat for safety reasons. Vettel and Hamilton also caught up with Ocon and overtook him on lap 42 and 43 respectively. Bottas drove the fastest lap of the race to date and shortened the gap to Stroll by around one second per lap.

Vettel and Hamilton also drove much faster than Stroll and reduced the gap lap by lap. Vettel drove the fastest lap of the race.

At the beginning of the last lap, Bottas was only 1.3 seconds behind Stroll and further shortened the gap so that he was within a second behind Stroll at the DRS measuring point. On the start-finish straight, with activated DRS, Bottas passed Stroll a few meters before the finish line thanks to an excess speed of 34 km / h.

Ricciardo won the race ahead of Bottas and Stroll. It was the first win for Ricciardo and Red Bull Racing since the 2016 Malaysian Grand Prix . Bottas achieved the fifth podium finish of the season, for Stroll it was the first podium finish in the Formula 1 World Championship, and also the first for a Williams driver since the 2016 Canadian Grand Prix when Bottas finished third. The remaining points were placed by Vettel, Hamilton, Ocon, Magnussen, Sainz, Alonso and Wehrlein. For Alonso and McLaren it was the first points of the season.

In the drivers 'and constructors' championships, the first three positions remained unchanged.
