Jolyon Palmer (born January 20, 1991 in Horsham , West Sussex , England ) is a British racing driver . His father is the former Formula 1 driver Jonathan Palmer . From 2011 to 2014 he started in the GP2 series , in which he won the championship in 2014. In 2016 and 2017 he drove for Renault in Formula 1.

Career

Palmer began his motorsport career in 2005 in the T-Cars series , in which racing drivers aged 14 to 17 drove limousines , and finished fifth in the fall championship. In 2006 he started again in T Cars and finished fifth in the championship. After participating in 2007 on two T-cars racing, he chose both the for himself, he moved into Formula racing and competed in the Formula Palmer Audi , a racing series which his father Jonathan Palmer founded. Jolyon Palmer won two races and finished tenth overall. In 2008 he stayed in Formula Palmer Audi and improved to third overall, although he only won one race.

In 2009 , Palmer switched to the newly founded FIA Formula 2 Championship , which was also organized by his father. There he got three points and finished 21st overall. He also competed in eight Formula Palmer Audi races and finished 16th in the overall standings with one win. In 2010 , Palmer stayed in Formula 2. With a win in the opening race at Silverstone , Palmer started the season well. He showed another impressive performance in Monza , where he won both races from pole position . After leading the championship for a long time, he was runner-up behind Dean Stoneman at the end of the season with a total of five wins .

In 2011 Palmer moved to Arden International and competed for the team in the GP2 Asia series and in the GP2 series . In the GP2 Asia Series, he finished the season 19th overall, in the GP2 Palmer remained with no points and was 28 in the drivers' standings. After the season he took for the Barwa Addax Team at the GP2 Final in 2011 in part. With third place as the best result, he was fourth in the ranking. He also returned to Formula 2 for a racing weekend , but did not take part in any races. For the GP2 series in 2012 , Palmer switched to iSport International within the GP2 series . At the second race weekend in as-Sachir he scored points in the GP2 series for the first time with a seventh place in the sprint race. After his car stopped with technical problems during the sprint race of the fourth race weekend before the start, the team decided to provide him with a new vehicle for the next event. With the new car, he immediately won the sprint race in Monte Carlo . It was his first GP2 win. With three podium finishes, Palmer finished the season in eleventh place overall and was defeated by his teammate Marcus Ericsson .

In 2013 , Palmer received a GP2 cockpit from Carlin . On the Hungaroring he achieved his first GP2 main race victory. He repeated this result in Singapore , where he managed to get another victory in the main race starting from pole position. Although his team-mate Felipe Nasr , unlike him, did not win a race, he beat Palmer within the team with 154 to 119 points, Palmer finished the season in seventh place in the drivers' standings. In 2014 , Palmer switched to DAMS within the GP2 series . At the first race weekend in as-Sachir , Palmer achieved a sprint victory after finishing third in the main race. This was followed by two second places in Barcelona . After winning the main race at the next race in Monte Carlo , he went five events without a win before winning the sprint race in Monza . At the following race weekend in Sochi , Palmer won the main race and thus won the championship prematurely. Palmer finished on the podium in 12 of 22 races and only failed to score twice. With 276 to 229 points he was ahead of Stoffel Vandoorne at the end of the season . Within the team, he clearly prevailed against Stéphane Richelmi , who had scored 73 points.

In 2015 , Palmer was a Formula 1 test driver at Lotus . In this function he took part in some free practice sessions at the Formula 1 Grand Prix. In 2016 , Palmer stayed with the racing team, which has since been taken over by Renault and renamed Renault Sport F1 Team , and received a regular cockpit. He chose # 30 as the Formula 1 start number. He replaced Romain Grosjean , who had moved to Haas . He was eleventh on his debut in Australia . At the Malaysian Grand Prix , Palmer scored a point in Formula 1 for the first time in tenth. Internally, he was defeated by Kevin Magnussen by one to seven points and was 18th in the drivers' standings.

In the 2017 Formula 1 World Championship , Palmer got a new team-mate at Renault in Nico Hülkenberg . At the Singapore Grand Prix , he achieved sixth place, his best Formula 1 position to date. After the race in Japan , Palmer lost his cockpit to Carlos Sainz Jr. He finished 17th overall at the end of the season.
