Dean Stoneman
Dean Stoneman (born July 24, 1990 ) is a British automobile racing driver . In 2010 he won the FIA Formula 2 Championship . He competed in the GP3 series in 2013 and 2014 . In 2016 he started in Indy Lights .
Career
Stoneman began his motorsport career in karting in 2002 , where he was active until 2006. He also made his first experiences in formula racing in the winter series of the British Formula Renault and in the BARC Formula Renault, in which he competed in three races each. In 2007, Stoneman won the BARC Formula Renault runner-up. He then competed in the winter series of the British Formula Renault and finished sixth overall. In 2008 he started again in the winter series of the British Formula Renault, and improved to third place overall. His main focus in 2008 and 2009 was on the British Formula Renault. He finished fourth in the championship in both years.
In 2010 Stoneman switched to Formula 2 . After starting the season well with a second place in his debut race, he won his first race on the second race weekend in Marrakech . After first finishing second overall, he took over the championship lead in the second half of the season and finally won the championship title with a total of six wins in front of his compatriot Jolyon Palmer . He then took part in the Formula Renault 3.5 on the last race weekend of the 2010 season for Mofaz Racing and finished 26th overall. As a reward for winning the Formula 2 title, Stoneman was allowed to take part in Formula 1 test drives for Williams in November .
In 2011 Stoneman planned to compete in the Formula Renault 3.5 for ISR Racing as a team-mate of Daniel Ricciardo . However, Stoneman had to cancel his participation before the start of the season in January of that year for health reasons, as he was diagnosed with testicular cancer. At the end of November, Stoneman returned to the racing car after successful treatment and took part in Formula Renault 3.5 test drives for ISR Racing. ISR Racing kept a Formula Renault 3.5 cockpit free for Stoneman for a longer period of time, but this commitment did not take place for financial reasons. Stoneman also completed test drives in the Indy Lights in winter 2011/2012 . In this series, too, a commitment failed due to the budget. Then Stoneman took part in test drives in Formula 2.
Since Stoneman could not find a permanent racing cockpit in motor racing for 2012, he took part in motorboat races. He succeeded in becoming the British powerboat master in the P1 SuperStock . In motor racing, he took part in two races of the Radical European Masters that year .
In 2013 Stoneman made a permanent return to automobile racing. He competed for Redline Racing in the British Porsche Carrera Cup and finished fifth overall with five wins. Only the champion, Michael Meadows , had won more races. In November he also made his comeback in formula racing. At Koiranen GP he received a cockpit for the last race weekend of the GP3 series . The aim of the assignment was the question of whether Stoneman should continue his career in formula racing or GT racing. No results were expected from his racing team. Nevertheless, Stoneman managed to score points with a sixth place in the first race. In the second race he even finished second on the podium. In the test drives that followed after the season, Stoneman set a best time of the day. In the 2014 GP3 series season , Stoneman competed for Marussia Manor Racing and returned full-time to formula racing. For Manor he won two sprints and one main race. Two events before the end of the season, Manor stopped racing and Stoneman returned to Koiranen GP. For Koiranen, Stoneman won both main races and came second once more. Stoneman finished the season in second place overall. With 163 to 207 points he was defeated by Alex Lynn .
In 2015 Stoneman switched to Formula Renault 3.5 at DAMS . He was also accepted into the Red Bull sponsorship program. Two second places were his best results and he was sixth overall. Internally he was defeated by Nyck de Vries with 130 to 148 points. Stoneman also went to three events in the GP2 series for Carlin . At the end of the year, Stoneman's Red Bull sponsorship ended.
In 2016 Stoneman moved to North America to Indy Lights and received a cockpit at Andretti Autosport . He won two races at Indianapolis Motor Speedway . Once on the street course, once on the oval. As the best driver of his team, he reached fifth place overall.
