Zachary Claman DeMelo (born April 20, 1998 ) is a Canadian racing driver . He won the Canadian Kart Championship in 2013 and 2014 . In 2018 he started in the IndyCar Series .

Career

DeMelo began his motorsport career in karting in 2009 , where he remained active until 2015. In 2010 he won the Canadian kart championship in the Rotax Mini Max category of the Juniors . In 2013 and 2014 he was Canadian karting champion among adults; In 2015 he finished second in the Canadian Kart Championship.

In 2015 DeMelo made his debut in formula racing . He contested four races of the northern European Formula Renault for Fortec Motorsport . He also made several guest starts in the Alpine Formula Renault , in the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup and in the MSV Formula 3 . In 2016 DeMelo competed for Juncos Racing in the Indy Lights in North America. With a fourth place as the best result, he ended his debut season in ninth place in the drivers' standings. In 2017 he started for Carlin and finished the season with a win in fifth place. In the same year he made his debut in the IndyCar Series. In the last race of the season he drove for Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing and finished the race in 17th place. In 2018 , he was one of three drivers who shared Dale Coyne's # 19 vehicle. With nine starts in 17 races, he finished 23rd in the overall standings. Without a cockpit for the 2019 season, he returned to the Indy Lights series. He won the first race in St. Petersburg with the Belardi Auto Racing team . After three of the ten weekends, however, he had to end the season early due to financial problems.

DeMelo grew up in Westmount , Québec .

In 2013 he and his sister Zoe Claman DeMelo founded the shoe brand ZCD Montreal. Wearers of the shoes were u. a. already Gigi Hadid and Jennifer Lopez .
