Andy Christian Souček (born June 14, 1985 in Madrid ) is a Spanish - Austrian racing driver . His greatest successes are winning the championship title in the Spanish Formula 3 Championship in 2005 and the Formula 2 Championship in 2009 .

Career

His career began in 1997 in karting , where he was active until 2002. As early as 2001 Souček made in the Portuguese Formula Ford his first experience in Formula racing . In 2002 he switched to Spanish Formula 3 and in his debut season finished eighth overall. In the following two years Souček was fourth overall. In 2005, the young racing driver contested his fourth season in Spanish Formula 3. After having been on the podium several times before, he achieved his first victory in formula racing this season. With a total of three victories Souček won the championship title of this series. In 2006 Souček switched to Formula Renault 3.5 and finished fourth in the overall standings with a race win. The Spaniard was also one of three Formula 1 test drivers for the Toyota team this season .

In 2007 Souček switched to the GP2 series and started for the backbench team David Price Racing . After not being able to score any points in the first nine race weekends, he was able to score points in every race on the last two race weekends, was also on the podium twice and finally finished 16th overall. Then Souček contested the first race weekend of the GP2 Asia series of the 2008 season for David Price Racing . Although he again achieved a podium position, he was replaced by Diego Nunes after this weekend and was the best-placed driver of his team in 14th overall.

In the GP2 series in 2008 , the Spaniard was initially without a cockpit. After his former team-mate Christian Bakkerud injured himself at the season opener, Souček stepped in as a substitute for Super Nova Racing at the second race weekend . At the next run he was a substitute driver for his old team, David Price Racing. The Spaniard represented Bakkerud at Super Nova Racing for the rest of the season. With a second place he finished 14th overall at the end of the season. He was also active in the Superleague Formula . For two teams he took part in the entire season. His best result was fifth.

In 2009 Souček switched to the revived Formula 2 , in which he was one of the most experienced drivers. After winning his first race in the series at Brno , his second win at Brands Hatch was overshadowed by Henry Surtees' fatal accident . With further victories in Donington , Oschersleben , Imola and Barcelona , he secured the championship title with one race weekend to go. Souček scored almost twice as many points as runner-up Robert Wickens .

In 2010 Souček became test and reserve driver for the new Formula 1 team Virgin Racing . He replaced Álvaro Parente , whose teammate he was at Super Nova Racing in 2008. At the beginning of August he terminated his contract with Virgin. He then took part in five race weekends of the 2010 Superleague Formula season for three different teams . He was twice on the podium in third place.

Private

Souček's father is from Graz , Austria and he is an Austrian citizen. He was born in Madrid , where he also spent most of his life. That's why, in his own opinion, he feels more like a Spaniard and competes in races with a Spanish racing license.
