The 2009 Formula 2 season was the first season of the revived FIA Formula 2 Championship . The season started on May 31st in Valencia and ended on November 1st in Barcelona . In contrast to other racing series, there are no teams in the racing series. The chassis are manufactured by Williams F1 and are named JPH1, named after Jonathan Palmer , director of the racing series, and Patrick Head , chief engineer at Williams F1. A tragic incident occurred at the fourth race weekend at Brands Hatch : Henry Surtees was hit in the head by a wheel of Jack Clarke's racing car and died in the hospital that evening.
On each race weekend there were two 30-minute training sessions, two 30-minute qualification sessions and two 40-minute (or 110 km, whichever of the two criteria was reached first) races. In the second race, a pit stop was mandatory and no tire changes took place. During the stop, the driver had to press a button that triggers a ten-second countdown. After the ten seconds had elapsed, the driver was allowed to leave the pits again. During the stop, the mechanics were allowed to make changes to the car. As in Formula 1, the first eight drivers in Formula 2 received points for the race according to the system: 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1. The overall winner of the series won a Formula 1 test with the Williams F1 team. In addition, the first three drivers in the overall standings received an FIA super license , which entitles them to start in Formula 1.
