death

One day later, on July 19, 2009, Surtees had a fatal accident in the second race at Brands Hatch . His compatriot Jack Clarke , who was driving in front of him , lost control of his vehicle in the fast Westfield section and hit the boundary wall, releasing a rear wheel which then jumped over the track. Surtees came in a group of several vehicles around the curve, which was not visible because of a crest, and was hit on the helmet by Clarke's wheel. He immediately lost consciousness and then hit the guardrail at Sheene's curve. After receiving initial medical attention on the route, he was flown to a London hospital, where he died on the evening of the same day.

The accident in Surtees was reminiscent of the accident of the Austrian Markus Höttinger , who was hit in the head by a bike in a Formula 2 race in 1980 and also suffered fatal injuries.
