Super license

Super License ( English Super License ) is the official name of the Formula 1 of the International Federation de l'Automobile (FIA) on request of racers awarded racing license , since the Formula 1 World Championship in 1984 as a prerequisite to participate in races of the Formula -1 World Championship is set.

Basics

The super license is only valid for the current calendar year and must be applied for at least 14 days before the technical acceptance of the vehicles at a Grand Prix. In the event of a driver change due to force majeure during the current Formula 1 season, the super license can be applied for at least 48 hours before the technical inspection.

Additional licenses of FIA in stages A , B , C and D , respectively. The prerequisite for the granting of the super license is that the driver already has the FIA ​​license level A and fulfills other conditions set out in Appendix L of the FIA ​​regulations. The drivers also have to pay a fee for the FIA ​​super license, which is considered the most expensive sports license in the world.

Up until the Formula 1 World Championship in 2000 , the super license was tied to the driver's license , so if the driver's license was withdrawn, the super license could also be withdrawn.

Award criteria until 2015

One of the conditions for an award in Appendix L was that the driver had achieved good placements in a lower racing category such as Formula 3 or the GP2 series . It was z. B. sufficient if a driver was placed in the top three of the GP2 series or the Super Formula in the last two years or is the current champion of the Formula 3 Euro Series , the national Formula 3 series in Great Britain, Japan, Spain or Italy or Formula Renault 3.5 was. It was also sufficient if a driver in the IndyCar Series had finished the championship in the last two years with a place in the top four. In addition, the top three winners of the FIA Formula 2 Championship held between 2009 and 2012 received such a super license.

Even pilots who already had a super license and who contested at least five grands prix in the past season or at least 15 grands prix in the last three seasons or who were test drivers for a team in the Formula 1 World Championship last season received a super license.

In addition to the criteria listed here, the license could also be obtained by driving at least 300 km in a current Formula 1 vehicle at racing speed over a period of a maximum of two days. In this case, the super license was issued provisionally for a trial period of 12 months and could be checked at any time and withdrawn if necessary . In the past, this was the most popular way to get a super license.

Award criteria since 2016

In September 2014, at the age of 16, Max Verstappen covered more than the required 300 km in test drives with the Toro Rosso team and thus received a super license. Although he was the reigning world kart champion , his entire experience in formula racing was limited to less than one season in the European Formula 3 championship . This caused public criticism from current and former pilots as well as from team managers and officials of the award criteria. Similar discussions had already taken place in December 2000, when the then 21-year-old Kimi Raikkonen received the super license after only 23 formula races (all in Formula Renault ), but initially for four races on trial.

After a meeting of the World Motorsport Council in September 2014, the FIA ​​announced that it would revise the criteria for awarding a super license.

In December 2014, the new criteria were adopted by the FIA ​​World Council. From the 2016 Formula 1 World Championship , every driver who applies for a super license must have reached the age of 18 and be in possession of a valid driver's license at the time of the application. In addition, the driver must have contested at least 80 percent of the races in one of the following racing series in two seasons:

In addition, the driver must have contested at least five grands prix in the previous season or at least fifteen grands prix in the past three seasons (these regulations remain unchanged), or have achieved 40 points according to a new point system in the past three years.

Although no points were awarded in the FIA Formula E championship itself, the winner of the driver's title was automatically qualified for a super license.

In December 2017, the FIA ​​announced that it would also change the rules for issuing super licenses for test drivers who are allowed to drive the vehicle in the first free practice session of a Grand Prix. The regulation that applied until 2016 had previously applied to these.

As of 2018 , a test driver must have contested at least six races in the FIA Formula 2 championship or scored at least 25 points according to the current point system in the past three years. Drivers who have already had a super license must have achieved a whole season in the FIA ​​Formula 2 championship or 25 points in the past three years.
