World champion Nico Rosberg

The 2016 Formula 1 World Championship was the 67th season of the Formula 1 World Championship and comprised 21 Grands Prix. It began on March 20 in Melbourne, Australia and ended on November 27 on Yas Island off Abu Dhabi . There the German Nico Rosberg was the driver's world champion for the only time . Mercedes won the Constructors' World Championship for the third time in a row .

Changes in 2016

Racetracks

The German Grand Prix returned to the racing calendar, and after a year off, another race was held at the Hockenheimring Baden-Württemberg . The European Grand Prix also returned to the calendar. For the first time it took place in Azerbaijan , which geographically belongs to the Middle East. The race was held in the capital Baku on the new Baku City Circuit .

In addition, two dates have changed. The Malaysian Grand Prix, previously held at the beginning of the season, moved to the second half of the season, while the Russian Grand Prix moved from the end to the beginning of the European races.

Technical regulations

All vehicles had to be equipped with up to two additional exhaust pipes through which the exhaust gases from the turbocharger's wastegate flowed. This was intended to increase the lower volume of the turbo engines introduced in 2014 without affecting the engine's performance or pollutant emissions. In contrast to the normal exhaust pipe, the position of the wastegate exhaust pipes was not specified in the regulations, so that they could also be used for aerodynamic purposes.

The side walls for the cockpit protection were pulled two centimeters higher than in the previous year and thus withstood more stringent crash tests.

According to the original plan, an engine manufacturer should only be able to equip all teams with a single drive specification. This would have prevented the use of engines from the previous year, as at Manor in 2015, as well as the exclusive use of further developed engines by the engine manufacturer's works team, such as Mercedes and Ferrari . However, at its meeting on December 2, 2015, the FIA World Council decided to allow new homologations of drives from the previous year.

The engine manufacturers were allowed to make design changes to the drive units to a certain extent. For this purpose, so-called tokens were assigned to the individual components of the drive unit , the total of all tokens was 66. Each manufacturer was allowed to use 32 tokens for modifications for the 2016 season, which corresponded to around 48 percent of the entire drive unit that was allowed to be revised. Originally a reduction to 25 tokens was planned for 2016, but this was discarded in order to give the engine manufacturers more freedom in further development. The freeze on the further development of several individual engine components, which should come into force for the season, has also been lifted.

As part of the Australian Grand Prix , the FIA announced that Ferrari had left nine tokens, Mercedes 13, Honda 14 and Renault 25 tokens unused by the season opener.

Ferrari , like Mercedes before, was allowed to supply a fourth team with engines. According to the regulations, a maximum of three teams were allowed.

Even during test drives, the vehicles had to comply with the technical regulations at all times.

The FIA's control mechanisms for the use of wind tunnels and CFD calculations by the teams have been improved.

Tire supplier Pirelli now provided three tire compounds per race weekend, of which a driver still had to use two different compounds in the race. In addition, all drivers were given an additional set of the softest tire compound for the final qualifying segment, which had to be used. Each team was allowed to determine the number of tire sets per compound themselves, there were a total of 13 sets per driver, and at least one tire set had to be selected from each tire compound. The tire selection for the respective Grand Prix outside of Europe had to be submitted 14 weeks before the race. For all Grands Prix in Europe it was enough to send the tire choice eight weeks in advance. If the deadline was missed, the FIA decided on the tire choice.

Sporting regulations

The penalties for unplanned changes of engines or gearboxes have been revised. If the change took place before a qualifying session, the mileage of the replaced parts was decisive for the amount of the penalty. If a change did not take place until after qualifying, the time at which the exchange was reported to the FIA decided the order of the starting grid.

If a driver caused an aborted start, he now had to start the race from the pit lane, regardless of whether he had taken the lead lap or not. The same rule applied to breaks in races and to drivers who drove their vehicles back to the pits.

The number of races per year was set at a minimum of eight and a maximum of 20 in October 2015. However, this contradicted the racing calendar published at the time, which provided for 21 races. The maximum number was increased to 21 by the FIA World Council in December 2015.

The Virtual Safety Car (VSC) could now also be used in free practice. In addition, the DRS was released immediately after the end of a virtual safety car phase in the race.

Radio traffic was significantly restricted. The drivers were allowed to be informed about a problem with their car if a race was imminent, and information on technical settings was forbidden. A pit stop could only be announced if it took place on the same lap. Lap and sector times as well as the tire choice of competitors as well as one's own tire choice for the following pit stop, and in qualifying even the distances to the vehicle in front could no longer be transmitted either. References to complying with the course limit and the number of laps remaining were also prohibited. Since several drivers and team officials complained that the restrictions were going too far, the FIA relaxed the restrictions on the morning before the Australian Grand Prix : both pit stops and tire selection, including those of the competitors, could now be discussed.

A good two weeks before the start of the season, the FIA World Council decided to revise the qualifying format. As before, qualifying was divided into three sections. The first section (Q1) lasted 16 minutes. After seven minutes, the slowest driver retired, whereby laps that had been started could no longer be counted when the time ran out. Further drivers then retired at intervals of 90 seconds until 15 drivers remained. These then contested the 15-minute, second qualifying section (Q2), where after six minutes drivers were again eliminated at intervals of 90 seconds. In the last section (Q3), which lasted 14 minutes, the remaining eight drivers competed against each other; here, too, after five minutes the drivers were eliminated at intervals of 90 seconds, until only the two first-placed drivers were left 90 seconds before the end . Initially, Bernie Ecclestone had ruled out the introduction of the changed qualifying format before the Spanish Grand Prix in mid-May 2016 because the required software could not be developed in time.

After the qualifying format at the start of the season had proven to be unsuitable in the opinion of drivers, team bosses, media representatives and fans, the team responsible unanimously decided before the start of the race to recommend to the Formula 1 Commission that the qualifying format of the previous season should be used again from the Bahrain Grand Prix to use. However, on March 24, 2016, it decided not to change the qualifying format for the time being.

After the Bahrain Grand Prix, a different qualifying format should be put to the vote, in which the rules of the 2015 season should be driven again. However, the two fastest lap times of a driver should be added up in each section. The FIA wanted to increase driving operations in the individual qualifying segments. However, the teams unanimously rejected this proposal. The FIA and FOM gave in and on April 7, 2016 proposed to the FIA World Council to revert to the 2015 mode from the Chinese Grand Prix . The latter approved the proposal on April 11th.

Engine suppliers

Renault announced in September 2015 that it would no longer be an engine supplier for Formula 1 teams. Nevertheless, Red Bull Racing and Scuderia Toro Rosso were still under contract with Renault as engine customers.

While Red Bull announced in December 2015 that it would start with Renault engines in 2016, but under the name TAG Heuer , Toro Rosso changed engine manufacturers and received engines from Ferrari from the previous year.

In October 2015, Mercedes confirmed that it would supply the Manor team , which had used the Ferrari 059/3 with a development status of 2014 in 2015, with the latest engines for the 2016 season.

driver

Romain Grosjean joined newcomer Haas after four years at Lotus . His team mate was Esteban Gutiérrez , who returned to Formula 1 as a regular driver after a year as a test driver for Scuderia Ferrari .

Jolyon Palmer made his debut as a Formula 1 racing driver at Renault in 2016 . The 2014 GP2 champion was a test driver at Lotus in 2015. His teammate was Kevin Magnussen , who competed in a 2015 Grand Prix for McLaren .

Two Formula 1 newbies made their debut at Manor : On the one hand Pascal Wehrlein , who won the DTM with HWA in 2015 and was a Formula 1 test driver at Mercedes , and on the other hand Rio Haryanto , who finished fourth in the GP2 series with Campos in 2015 . Haryanto was the first Indonesian Formula 1 driver.

The 2016 GP2 Series champion , Stoffel Vandoorne , made his debut at the Bahrain Grand Prix as a replacement for the injured Fernando Alonso at McLaren .

Alexander Rossi , who had completed five races for Manor in 2015, left Formula 1 and switched to the IndyCar Series , in which he received a regular cockpit at Andretti Autosport .

Roberto Merhi and Will Stevens , who also drove for Manor in Formula 1 in 2015, switched to the FIA World Endurance Championship , in which they competed for Manor Motorsport in the LMP2 category.

Although he had a valid contract with the Lotus team and was confirmed as a regular driver for 2016 in mid-2015, Pastor Maldonado announced on Twitter a few weeks before the start of the season that he would not be a regular driver for the team in the 2016 season.

After the Russian Grand Prix , Red Bull Racing and Scuderia Toro Rosso decided to swap the cockpits of Daniil Kwjat and Max Verstappen with immediate effect .

After the German Grand Prix , Haryanto lost his cockpit at Manor because he was unable to raise the contractually agreed sponsorship money of 15 million euros for the entire season. His successor was Esteban Ocon , who previously worked as a test driver for Mercedes and Renault in 2016 and drove for the ART Grand Prix in the DTM . Last year Ocon won the GP3 series with ART Grand Prix .

Teams

Haas entered the Formula 1 World Championship at the start of the season. After a 29-year break, an American team took part in the Formula 1 World Championship again, after a Haas team was last registered at the 1986 Australian Grand Prix . Except for the name, there was no connection between the two Haas racing teams: The Haas team from the 1980s belonged to the entrepreneur Carl Haas , while the Haas F1 team was run by the entrepreneur Gene Haas . Gene Haas is also a partner of the NASCAR teams Stewart-Haas Racing .

A team known as Forza Rossa Racing tried unsuccessfully to get a start in the 2016 season. In response to another tender for two places from 2016 or 2017, the FIA received two applications by August 2015, but both applicants did not meet the specified criteria for new teams; the FIA therefore abandoned the tender without any result.

Renault took over the Lotus F1 Team , which had been in financial difficulties for several years, and thus entered the Formula 1 World Championship as a works team for the first time since 2009 . The team registered under the name Renault Sport F1 Team .

Season preparation

22-25 February: Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya

The first week of testing took place from February 22nd to 25th at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya in Spain. About a month before the start of the test drives, Sauber announced that it would be using a modified model from the previous year, as the new Sauber C35 could not be completed on time.

With the Ferrari SF16-H , the Force India VJM09 , the Haas VF-16 , the Manor MRT05 , the McLaren MP4-31 , the Mercedes F1 W07 Hybrid , the Red Bull RB12 , the Renault RS16 , the Toro Rosso STR11 and the Williams FW38 made their track debut with ten cars. At the start of the test on February 22nd, Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel was fastest with 1: 24.939 minutes, followed by Lewis Hamilton in a Mercedes and Daniel Ricciardo in a Red Bull . Hamilton covered more than 700 kilometers with 156 laps that day, making him the driver with the greatest distance, followed by Marcus Ericsson in the Sauber and Ricciardo with 88 and 87 laps respectively. Haas pilot Romain Grosjean lost the front wing of his car around noon, which was the only interruption in the test drives. Afterwards he did not go out on the track for several hours, during the further course of the day he drove a few more laps, but with a speed limit. He drove the shortest distance with 31 laps, followed by Renault driver Jolyon Palmer , who only drove 37 laps due to software problems.

On February 23, Vettel set the fastest time again with a lap time of 1: 22.810 minutes, ahead of Ricciardo and Force India driver Sergio Pérez . With 172 laps (around 800 km), Nico Rosberg drove the longest distance ahead of Valtteri Bottas and Vettel. Palmer suffered damage to the turbocharger and therefore drove the lowest distance by far with 42 laps.

Nico Hülkenberg set the fastest time on February 24, 2016 with a lap time of 1: 23.110 minutes, ahead of Grosjean and Kimi Räikkönen . Carlos Sainz junior drove the longest distance with 161 laps (around 750 km) ahead of Felipe Nasr and Kevin Magnussen . Rosberg and Hamilton took turns at Mercedes and drove 162 laps together. Jenson Button drove the shortest distance with 51 laps.

On February 25, Raikkonen set the fastest time with a lap time of 1: 23.477 minutes ahead of Daniil Kwjat and Force India test driver Alfonso Celis junior . Magnussen drove the longest distance with 153 laps ahead of Nasr and Max Verstappen . Rosberg and Hamilton took turns at Mercedes again and drove 185 laps together. Fernando Alonso only drove 3 laps and thus the shortest distance due to a leak in the cooling system.

1st - 4th March: Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya

The second week of testing also took place from March 1st to 4th at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya in Spain.

With the Sauber C35 , the last missing car for the 2016 season made its track debut. On the first day of testing on March 1st, Rosberg set the fastest time in 1: 23.022 minutes, followed by Bottas and Alonso. Verstappen drove the longest distance with 144 laps, followed by Bottas and Hülkenberg with 123 and 121 laps respectively. Rosberg and Hamilton took turns at Mercedes again and covered 172 laps together. Esteban Gutiérrez only drove 23 laps due to a problem with the fuel supply.

On March 2nd, Bottas set the fastest time in 1: 23.261 minutes, followed by Hamilton and Magnussen. Sainz drove the greatest distance with 166 laps, followed by Vettel and Ricciardo with 151 and 135 laps respectively. Gutiérrez only drove one lap on the entire day of testing because there was a problem with the turbocharger on his car.

Raikkonen was fastest on March 3rd with a lap time of 1: 22.765 minutes ahead of Felipe Massa and Hülkenberg. With Verstappen, a Toro Rosso driver again drove the most laps, 159 on that day, ahead of Hülkenberg (137) and Raikkonen (136). With 48 laps, Pascal Wehrlein drove the shortest distance. Grosjean caused three interruptions with two accidents and a technical defect. In the morning, Ferrari tested the Halo system on a Formula 1 racing car on the Raikkonen vehicle for the first time , in which the driver's head is protected from debris or torn off wheels.

On March 4th, the last day of testing before the start of the season, Vettel set the fastest time in 1: 22.852 minutes ahead of Sainz and Massa. With 142 laps, Vettel also drove the greatest distance, also ahead of Sainz (133) and Ericsson (132). Again the Manor team drove the shortest distance, Rio Haryanto covered 58 laps. Ferrari tested the Halo system again on Vettel's vehicle in the morning.
