Career

Beginnings in motorsport (1994-2006)

Di Resta began his motorsport career in karting in 1994 , where he was active until 2002. He also made his formula racing debut in the winter championship of the British Formula Renault in 2002 and finished twelfth. In 2003 di Resta competed in the British Formula Renault and finished seventh overall with a win. In 2004 he played his second season in this series for the British team Manor Motorsport . He won four races and improved to third place overall. Di Resta also won the McLaren Autosport BRDC Award in 2004 .

In 2005 di Resta switched to the Formula 3 Euro Series and stayed with Manor Motorsport. He achieved a podium placement and finished tenth overall at the end of the season. His team-mate Lucas di Grassi , who finished third, was inferior to him. In 2006 di Resta played his second season in the Formula 3 Euro Series. He switched to the ASM Formule 3 championship team, which had won the championship with Lewis Hamilton the previous year . Di Resta won five races and thus secured the championship title. His biggest rival was his team-mate Sebastian Vettel , who eventually became runner-up. Di Resta also won the Formula 3 Masters in Zandvoort .

DTM (2007-2010)

Paul di Resta at the 2009 season opener at the Hockenheimring

For the 2007 season he was hired by Mercedes-Benz for the Persson Motorsport team for the DTM and received a two-year-old version of the AMG-Mercedes C-Class . He made DTM history by being the first driver to lead the overall standings in a so-called “year-old car”. At the end of his first DTM season, he finished fifth in the overall standings, ahead of the reigning champion Bernd Schneider , who drove a current Mercedes model. In his first season di Resta managed four podium finishes, but he was denied a win.

Thanks to his good performance, di Resta received a current version of the AMG-Mercedes C-Class from the HWA team in the 2008 season . In the fourth race at the EuroSpeedway Lausitz he achieved his first DTM victory and he also set the DTM lap record on this track. With another victory in Barcelona and another five second places, di Resta only had to admit defeat to Audi driver Timo Scheider at the end of the season . In 2009 di Resta stayed with HWA and contested his third DTM season. At the beginning of the season he did not succeed in building on the successes of the previous year. After winning a race at Brands Hatch , he took another two podiums and eventually finished third overall.

At the Malaysian Grand Prix 2010 di Resta was allowed to participate in the first free practice for Force India

After taking part in official Formula 1 test drives for Force India at the end of 2009 , he was signed by Force India as a test driver for the 2010 season in February 2010 . In this role, di Resta took part in eight Friday training sessions for his team as part of the Formula 1 racing weekends. He made his debut at the Australian Grand Prix . In parallel to his test driver engagement, di Resta stayed with HWA in the DTM and contested his fourth season in 2010 . After initially having to settle for three second places, he scored his first win of the season at his home race at Brands Hatch and won three races in a row with further victories at Oschersleben and Hockenheim . At the season finale in Shanghai , a second place was enough for him to win the championship ahead of his team mates Gary Paffett and Bruno Spengler .

Formula 1 (2011-2013)

In 2011 di Resta left the DTM and switched to Formula 1 as a regular driver. At Force India, he completed his first Formula 1 season alongside Adrian Sutil . In the first two races he finished in tenth place, for which there was a point. After two more points, he achieved his best result to date at the Singapore Grand Prix in sixth place. He finished the season as the best newcomer in 13th place in the drivers' standings and was internally defeated by Sutil with 27 to 42 points. In the 2011 season, Di Resta was the pilot who completed the most laps with 1105 of 1133 possible laps.

In 2012 , di Resta stayed with Force India and contested his second Formula 1 season. With Nico Hülkenberg he got a new teammate. Di Resta crossed the finish line in nine of the twenty races. At the Singapore Grand Prix he achieved his best result of the season with fourth place, which was his best result in Formula 1 to date. Di Resta finished 14th in the drivers' standings and was defeated by Hülkenberg within the team with 46 to 63 points.

In 2013 di Resta was again under contract with Force India. He started the season with an eighth place in Australia . At the Bahrain Grand Prix , di Resta was one of the top three positions for a long time. He finally finished in fourth place. It was his best finish of the season. Di Resta finished the world championship in twelfth place. With 48 to 29 points he prevailed internally against Sutil. After the season, di Resta lost his cockpit at Force India.

Di Resta came in 2014 back into the DTM. He received a cockpit with the Mercedes HWA team. Three fourth places were his best results. He was 15th in the drivers' championship. In 2015 di Resta stayed with HWA in the DTM. He chose the 3 as his starting number. At the first race weekend at Hockenheim, he achieved his first DTM podium finish after his return with a third place. In the further course of the season he was on the podium twice. He improved to eighth place in the drivers' standings and was the second best Mercedes driver behind the champion Pascal Wehrlein .

In 2016 di Resta contested another DTM season for HWA. He won a race at the first race weekend in Hockenheim. During the season he reached three more podium finishes. He was again - this time behind Robert Wickens - the second best Mercedes driver and finished the season in fifth place.

In 2017 di Resta stayed in the DTM. He was also a substitute driver for Williams in the 2017 Formula 1 World Championship . In this function he took part in the Hungarian Grand Prix as a representative for the sick Felipe Massa .

In 2018 di Resta competed again for HWA in the DTM. With three wins and three further podium finishes, di Resta finished the season in third place overall and was the second-best Mercedes driver after Gary Paffett , who won the championship. With the withdrawal of HWA and Mercedes from the DTM, di Resta's involvement there also ended.

In 2019 , di Resta switched to R-Motorsport within the DTM , where he will drive one of the four vehicles from DTM newcomer Aston Martin .
