Aïello became known as the champion of various touring car championships in France in 1994, Germany in 1997 and Great Britain in 1999 and the victory at the Le Mans 24 Hours in 1998. From 2000 to 2003 he drove in the DTM for the Abt Sportsline team with the initially hopeless inferior Abbot Audi TT-R. After a mediocre year 2000, he achieved the first victories for his team in 2001. In 2002 he won the title in this series before record champion Bernd Schneider . In 2003 he won another race at the Nürburgring and announced his move to Opel at the end of the season . He was looking for a new challenge and regretted not having left the Abt Sportsline team after his 2002 title. From 2004 he competed in the DTM for the Opel Phoenix Racing team.
After two rather disappointing years (2004/2005), which was more down to his vehicle (Opel Vectra GTS) and less to his ability, he finally retired from motorsport on September 17, 2005 as part of the DTM race at the Euro Speedway Lausitz Known at the end of the 2005 season.
