Roberto Ravaglia (born May 26, 1957 in Venice ) is a former Italian racing driver . He was the first touring car world champion in history. He enjoyed great success both as a driver and as a team boss.

Career

DTM championship car from 1989

At the beginning of his touring car career, Ravaglia relied on the BMW brand . A connection that continues to this day. He made his first big appearance in 1984 when he took part in the European Touring Car Championship in a BMW 635 CSi at the age of 27 . Two years later he won the European Championship on the same vehicle. His career highlight followed in 1987: winning the World Touring Car Championship in the BMW M3 .

In the years that followed, Ravaglia won almost every discipline in which he competed. The title in the German Touring Car Championship in a BMW M3 (1989) was followed by triumphs at the endurance classics in Spa-Francorchamps (BMW 318i, 1994) and at the Nürburgring (BMW 320i, 1995). By the end of his active career in 1997, Ravaglia had a total of 52 victories and was on the podium 136 more times.

In 2000 he returned to the European Touring Car Championship as team principal of BMW Team Italy-Spain . He and his team have been successfully competing in the World Touring Car Championship since 2005.
