Aguri Suzuki ( Japanese鈴木 亜 久 里, Suzuki Aguri ; born September 8, 1960 in Tokyo ) is a former Japanese racing driver . He drove in Formula 1 between 1988 and 1995 . Until May 6, 2008, Suzuki ran its own F1 team under his name.

Racing career

Suzuki began his career in 1972 as a kart driver. In 1978 Suzuki won the Japanese Kart Championship. Only a year later he made his debut in the Japanese Formula 3 championship. In addition, he continued to drive karting and won the championship again in 1981. In 1983 he drove a Hayashi - Toyota in the F3 series and finished in second place. The Japanese switched to touring car racing and drove a Nissan there . He won the Japanese title in 1986; in the same year Suzuki entered the Japanese Formula 2 and took part in the 24 Hours of Le Mans .

formula 1

Suzuki’s first Formula 1 race was initially scheduled for autumn 1987 . The British Middlebridge-Trussardi team , which is currently being set up and which was able to fall back on Japanese sponsors, registered Suzuki for the Portuguese Grand Prix and then for the remaining races of the season. The team that wanted to use a revised Benetton B186 was not allowed to participate. Suzuki's Formula 1 debut was therefore delayed by more than a year. In 1988 he appeared for the first time at the Japanese Grand Prix in Suzuka in the French team Larrousse . For the 1989 season he signed with the German Zakspeed team, which used Japanese engines from Yamaha that year . In 1990 Suzuki returned to Larrousse. At the Japanese Grand Prix he achieved the best result of his F1 career when he finished third. It was also the only podium in the history of the Larrousse team. In 1991 he drove again for Larrousse and then switched to Footwork / Arrows for the 1992 and 1993 seasons . In 1994 he was initially no longer able to get a cockpit, but was used in the course of the year by the Jordan team as a replacement for the Northern Irishman Eddie Irvine . In 1995 Suzuki came to Ligier , but had to share his place there with the Briton Martin Brundle . The two drivers alternated alongside Frenchman Olivier Panis . After the Japanese Grand Prix at the end of the season, Suzuki decided to withdraw from Formula 1 due to a serious accident.

Team owner

Super Aguri-Honda, 2007

In 2003 Suzuki founded the Super Aguri Fernandez Racing Team together with Adrián Fernández and thus entered the IndyCar Series .

Until May 6, 2008 he was team boss of the Super Aguri F1 Team , with which he started in Formula 1 since the 2006 season , and of the Autobacs Racing Team Aguri , which won the GT 500 title in the Japanese Super in 2007 with a Honda NSX -GT championship won. On May 6, 2008, the Super Aguri F1 team disbanded due to a lack of liquidity.
