The 1989 Portuguese Grand Prix took place on September 24th at the Autódromo Fernanda Pires da Silvaist near Estoril and was the 13th race of the 1989 Formula 1 World Championship .

Reports

background

Since Jean Alesi again preferred his title ambitions in Formula 3000 over Formula 1 involvement with Tyrrell , his cockpit was once again taken over by Johnny Herbert .

Bertrand Gachot has been replaced at Onyx by Finnish newcomer JJ Lehto after publicly criticizing the team.

training

Yannick Dalmas and Nicola Larini were excluded from participating in the race weekend, as changes to their racing cars that did not conform to the rules were found during the technical inspection.

Between the pole sitter Ayrton Senna and his leading in the world championship standings teammate Alain Prost qualified the two Ferrari pilots Gerhard Berger and Nigel Mansell for the grid positions two and three. Aided by special qualifying tires from Pirelli , Pierluigi Martini achieved fifth on the grid in the Minardi ahead of Williams driver Riccardo Patrese .

run

Already at the start Senna lost first place to Berger and finally on the eighth lap also second place to his team-mate Mansell. This ousted Berger from the lead on lap 24.

When Mansell turned into the pit lane after lap 39, Martini took the lead for one lap. Mansell meanwhile drove past his pit crew. When he noticed this mistake, he put the car in reverse and parked in front of his box, which was a clear violation of the rules. So the race management showed him the black flag to disqualify him. Mansell ignored this. While he was involved in a duel for second place with Senna, the two collided and were eliminated. As a result, Prost came in second behind Berger. Stefan Johansson was third ahead of Alessandro Nannini , Pierluigi Martini and Jonathan Palmer . For the first and only time, Team Onyx was able to record a podium place.
