The 1989 Japanese Grand Prix took place in Suzuka on October 22nd and was the 15th race of the 1989 Formula 1 World Championship .

Reports

background

Since Alain Prost went into the last two races of the season with a 16 point lead over Ayrton Senna , he only had the option of winning both in order to defend his world title.

Bertrand Gachot returned to the field, but not to Onyx , but to Rial , where he replaced Gregor Foitek after only one mission.

training

Ayrton Senna secured his twelfth pole position of the season in front of his McLaren team- mate Alain Prost and the two Ferraris of Gerhard Berger and Nigel Mansell . Behind them Riccardo Patrese and Alessandro Nannini formed the third row in front of Thierry Boutsen and Philippe Alliot .

run

Prost got off to a better start, so that he could turn into the first corner before Senna. After the Frenchman had initially gained a lead, the two opponents separated only one second from the 40th lap. While Prost seemed to have advantages on the straights, Senna was almost able to catch up in the corners. At the end of the 47th lap, Senna started an attempt to overtake in the area of the narrow chicane near the pit entrance. Prost prevented his teammate from taking the lead by pulling in his lane. There was a collision. Prost assumed that the world championship was definitely decided in his favor and got out. Senna, however, waved marshals over to push his car so that he could continue, skipping the chicane in whose emergency exit both colliding vehicles had slipped. Since the front of his car was damaged, he had to go to the box to have the front wing changed. He came back on track five seconds behind the now leading Nannini. He caught up with it by the 50th lap, overtook him at the exact point where he had tried against Prost before and crossed the finish line first.

Before the awards ceremony, Senna was disqualified and Nannini was declared the winner. The official reason given was that he had unlawfully shortened the chicane after being pushed by the marshals. Team McLaren tried to appeal this disqualification to the FIA . The negotiations on this dragged on into late autumn. In the end, Ayrton Senna received an additional fine of $ 100,000 and a six-month suspension for claiming at a press conference that FIA President Jean-Marie Balestre had disqualified his compatriot Alain Prost from the World Cup.

The two Williams drivers Patrese and Boutsen took second and third place behind Nannini . Nelson Piquet was ranked fourth ahead of Martin Brundle and Derek Warwick .
