Reports
backgrounds
After the Russian Grand Prix , Lewis Hamilton led the drivers' standings with 73 points ahead of Valtteri Bottas and 107 points ahead of Charles Leclerc . In the constructors' championship, Mercedes led Ferrari with 162 points and Red Bull Racing with 260 points .
At the Japanese Grand Prix, Pirelli provided the drivers with the tire compounds P Zero Hard (white, compound C1 ), P Zero Medium (yellow, C2 ) and P Zero Soft (red, C3 ), as well as Cinturato Intermediates (green) and Cinturato Full for wet conditions -Wets (blue) available.
Sebastian Vettel (nine), Daniel Ricciardo , Lance Stroll (five each), Antonio Giovinazzi , Kevin Magnussen (four each), Romain Grosjean (three), Hamilton, Daniil Kwjat , Kimi Räikkönen , Carlos Sainz jr. , Max Verstappen (two each), Alexander Albon , Pierre Gasly , Sergio Pérez and George Russell (one each) went into the race weekend with penalty points.
With Hamilton (five times), Vettel (four times) and Räikkönen (once), three former winners competed in this Grand Prix. Hamilton won the race once when it was held at Fuji Speedway in 2007 .
The race stewards were Dennis Dean (USA), Gerd Ennser (DEU), Tom Kristensen (DNK) and Yasuhiro Yodono (JAP).
The weather forecast predicted that Typhoon Hagibis would hit Japan on Saturday and therefore squalls and heavy rain were to be expected. The organizer therefore canceled all route activities planned for Saturday for safety reasons. The third free practice session was canceled without replacement, and qualifying was postponed to Sunday morning. A postponement of the start of the race, which should take place at 2:10 p.m. local time, was not planned. The two races planned for the Japanese Formula 4 championship on the race weekend were canceled in advance in order to have more leeway in postponing the training sessions and qualifying for the Formula 1 World Championship.
free training
In the first free practice, Bottas achieved the fastest lap time in 1: 28.731 minutes ahead of Hamilton and Vettel.
In the second free practice, Bottas was fastest in 1: 27.785 minutes ahead of Hamilton and Verstappen. Since the sporting regulations did not provide for a cancellation of the qualifying without replacement, the race stewards decided that in this case the result of the second free practice would have been used to determine the starting grid, this would have the eleventh pole position for Bottas in the Formula 1 World Championship means.
Qualifying
Qualifying was postponed to race Sunday due to Typhoon Hagibi . It was the fifth time in the history of the Formula 1 World Championship that the race and qualifying were held on the same day.
The qualifying consisted of three parts with a net running time of 45 minutes. In the first qualifying segment (Q1), the drivers had 18 minutes to qualify for the race. All drivers who achieved a time in the first section that was a maximum of 107 percent of the fastest lap time qualified for the Grand Prix. The best 15 drivers reached the next part. Leclerc was the fastest. The segment was interrupted after accidents involving Robert Kubica and Magnussen. As a result, neither did a timed lap and thus did not qualify for the Grand Prix. Besides them, Russell, Pérez and Ricciardo were eliminated.
The second section (Q2) lasted 15 minutes. The ten fastest drivers qualified for the third part of the qualifying and had to start the race with the tires used here, all other drivers had a free choice of tires for the start of the race. Bottas was the fastest. Nico Hülkenberg , Kwjat, Räikkönen, Stroll and Giovinazzi were eliminated.
The final section (Q3) lasted twelve minutes, during which the first ten starting positions were awarded. With a lap time of 1: 27.064 minutes, Vettel set the fastest time ahead of Leclerc and Bottas. It was the 57th pole position for Vettel in the Formula 1 World Championship and the fifth for a Ferrari driver in a row.
Kubica and Magnussen were allowed to start the race because they were both fast enough in free practice. Kubica had to start from the pit lane because the monocoque on his car was irreparably damaged and had to be replaced.
run
Due to a technical problem with the display of the checkered flag, the race was scored after 52 instead of the planned 53 laps.
Bottas won the race ahead of Vettel and Hamilton. The remaining points were placed by Albon, Sainz, Leclerc, Gasly, Pérez, Stroll and Kwjat. As Hamilton set the fastest lap and finished in the top ten, he received an additional point. Ricciardo and Hülkenberg, who occupied positions six and ten, were subsequently disqualified. The race stewards classified a system that automatically adjusted the brake balance several times in one lap, but did not violate the technical rules, as an unauthorized driving aid.
The first three positions in the drivers' standings remained unchanged, but only Hamilton and Bottas had a mathematical chance of winning the title. In the constructors' championship, Mercedes was declared world champion early. It was the sixth constructors' title for Mercedes in a row.
