Reports
background
For the last two races of the year Ivan Capelli was replaced at Ferrari by Nicola Larini . Jan Lammers returned to the Grand Prix scene more than ten years after his last Formula 1 appearance at the French Grand Prix in 1982 to take over from Karl Wendlinger at March . The sponsorship money urgently needed by the team and brought by Lammers had led to this change.
training
Nigel Mansell completed the fastest training lap for the 13th time this season. His team-mate Riccardo Patrese qualified for second place on the grid, ahead of the two McLaren drivers Ayrton Senna and Gerhard Berger as well as Michael Schumacher on Benetton and the two Lotus team- mates Johnny Herbert and Mika Häkkinen .
Due to heavy rain, no time improvements were possible during the second qualifying session on Saturday. Most pilots therefore decided not to take part in this round.
run
Mansell finished the first lap of the race with a lead of around 3.1 seconds over his team-mate Patrese. Senna, who was initially in third place, retired after two laps due to an engine failure. His team-mate Berger fell behind Schumacher, Herbert and Häkkinen after ten laps due to an unscheduled pit stop. Within two laps, both Schumacher and Herbert, who had followed him directly, had to give up due to gear damage.
After driving through debris left on the track after an accident by Maurício Gugelmin , Mansell made a pit stop to have his tires changed. Nevertheless, he was still in the lead with around 20 seconds ahead of Patrese and Berger, who had stopped earlier as planned. Martin Brundle , who had only qualified for 13th place on the grid, was already fifth behind Mika Häkkinen at this point. Érik Comas followed in sixth place ahead of Andrea de Cesaris .
On the 36th lap, Mansell deliberately slowed down to let his team-mate overtake him and then put him under pressure. Just like at the Italian Grand Prix six weeks earlier, he apparently wanted to demonstrate that he was the superior driver of the team. On the 45th lap he retired due to an engine failure.
Patrese won the race ahead of Berger and Brundle, who benefited from the technical failure of Häkkinen. Andrea de Cesaris took fourth place ahead of Jean Alesi and Christian Fittipaldi .
