Reports
background
Once again, Jordan made a driver change: Emanuele Naspetti was replaced by the debutant Eddie Irvine . Two other drivers also made their debut: local driver Toshio Suzuki for Larrousse and Jean-Marc Gounon for Minardi .
After BMS Scuderia Italia had stopped racing, there were now only 24 vehicles left.
training
Alain Prost took pole position for the 13th time this season; it would be the last of his career. Behind him were the two McLaren of Ayrton Senna and Mika Häkkinen . It was followed by Michael Schumacher , Gerhard Berger and Damon Hill , who was thrown back by an accident. Irvine's performance, who qualified for eighth place on the grid in his first race, was also remarkable.
run
Senna started better than his arch-rival Prost and took the lead. Berger and Irvine also made up positions with good starts and both passed Schumacher. Both Schumacher and Hill behind him were able to overtake Irvine again after a short time. When the two of them were getting ready to overtake Berger, Hill took the opportunity and passed Schumacher; but an attempt to overtake Berger failed. A short time later, Hill and Schumacher collided, which threw Schumacher out of the race.
Senna made an early pit stop and Prost took the lead for the time being. When it started to rain, however, Senna showed his whole class and was able to overtake the Frenchman who had not yet made a pit stop. After both had switched to rain tires, he was even able to pull out a lead of around 30 seconds. When the track dried up again, Senna was stopped by the Irvine to be lapped, who even lapped himself back again. Although Senna lost more than 15 seconds on Prost, the latter could never jeopardize his victory. Meanwhile, Berger had retired with engine failure.
Ultimately, Senna won ahead of Prost and Häkkinen, who took the first podium in his career. The remaining points went to Hill and the two Jordan drivers Rubens Barrichello and Irvine, who had "shot down" Derek Warwick , who had been sixth up to that point, shortly before the end . For Barrichello it was the first point in his career. After the race, Senna was violent against Irvine, which almost led to a suspension for Senna.
