biography

Toshio Suzuki was born in Nagoya in 1948 . In 1967 he completed his literary studies at Keiō University . Shortly thereafter, he joined the Tokuma Shoten publishing house . In 1973 he became editor of Comic & Comic magazine . He worked there with many film producers such as Osamu Tezuka or Shōtarō Ishinomori .

After Suzuki became editor of the anime magazine Animage in 1978 , he asked Isao Takahata and Hayao Miyazaki to write an article about their film Taiyō no Ōji: Horusu no Daibōken . However, his application was denied. After the release of Miyazaki's Castle of Cagliostro, he and Suzuki met again when Suzuki again asked to write an article about the film. This time the meeting ended in a long lasting partnership. The article Hayao Miyazaki's world of romance and adventure (Japanese 宮崎駿 冒 険 と ロ マ ン の 世界 Miyazaki Hayao bōken to roman no sekai ) finally appeared in 1981 in the August issue of Animage. Suzuki later stated that "it all started here". He was one of those who made the publication of Miyazaki's manga Nausicaä from the Valley of the Winds possible. Suzuki also made a film possible. This was published on March 11, 1984.

In June 1985, Suzuki founded Studio Ghibli together with Takahata and Miyazaki . He worked for Tokuma Shoten on the production committee for the films The Castle in the Sky (1986), My Neighbor Totoro (1988) and The Last Fireflies (1988). Suzuki was also a co-producer on Kiki's Small Delivery Service (1989) and officially joined Studio Ghibli as a producer in 1989 after quitting Tokuma Shoten.

He then produced the films Tears of Memory (1991) and Porco Rosso (1992) by Takahata and Miyazaki. In 1993 he was responsible for Whispering the Sea by Tomomi Mochizuki . The following year he worked as a producer for Takahata's film Pom Poko and in 1995 for Yoshifumi Kondō's film Voice of the Heart and Miyazaki's short film On Your Mark . In the same year Suzuki was also appointed producer of the next planned feature film by Studio Ghibli, which was released in 1997 under the name Princess Mononoke . In 1999, Suzuki was the producer of Takahata's film My Neighbors the Yamadas .

In 2000 the film Shiki-Jitsu directed by Hideaki Anno and produced by Toshio Suzuki was released. The following year Miyazaki 's Spirited Away celebrated its premiere. In 2002, The Kingdom of Cats by director Hiroyuki Morita and Ghiblies: Episode 2 by Yoshiyuki Momose was released. In 2003, Toshio Suzuki and Hayao Miyazaki won the Oscar for best animated feature film for Spirited Away . Suzuki was also the producer of Mamoru Oshii's 2004 film Ghost in the Shell 2 - Innocence . Miyazaki's Howl's Moving Castle was also released in 2004 and nominated for an Oscar.

In March 2004, Suzuki was appointed chairman of Studio Ghibli, but he resigned from this post in 2008. In 2014, a film he produced was again nominated for an Oscar, Miyazaki's 2013 film How the Wind Rises . Hiromasa Yonebayashi's memories of Marnie (2014) finally became Suzuki's last film as a producer, in March 2014 he resigned as such and held the post of "previous producer" as a board member ( 代表 取締 役 プ ロ デ ュ ー サ ー , Daihyō torishimariyaku purodyūsā ).

In 2016, Suzuki returned as a producer. Alongside Pascal Caucheteux and two other producers, he was the co-producer of the Franco-Belgian-Japanese film The Red Tortoise (2016) directed by Michael Dudok de Wit . The Studio Ghibli- Wild Bunch co-production won at the International Film Festival of Cannes in the section Un Certain Regard and was nominated for the Oscar in 2017 "in the category of animated Best Picture nominee".
